Maps
• Map is a two dimensional scaled plan view,
showing required information of a given area.
• The term drawing is used when the area is
comparatively small.
• The drawing of a construction project is
important as it contains the basic information
required to commence the project.(Location,
orientation and size)
Scale
• The linear reduction of the map/drawing
compared to the prototype.

• The scale is generally expressed in three ways;

1. As a ratio ( 1:10000)
2. As a graphical form
3. As a unit relation ( one inch to mile)
Length & Area Calculations on Maps
Example 1.
Length of a road and area of a land measured on
a map of scale 1:10000 are 28.4 cm and 45.4
cm2 respectively. Calculate the actual length and
area.
Working on Duplicate Maps
• Mostly people are working on duplicate maps
to get measurements.
• It must be confirmed that the duplicate map is
in the same size with the original as there can
be scale changing occur while duplicating.
• If only the duplicate is available, the scale
changing can not be identified unless the scale
is given in graphical form.
