Cartoon Annotation and Analysis Task

AIM OF THE TASK: to annotate and explain the message of a visual source relating to an aspect of Chinese
history during the late 18th and 19th century.

TIMING: you have three lessons in total to complete this whole task.

FORMAT OF TASK:

STAGE 1: COLLABORATION:
You will be placed into pairs or threes. You will need to work with your team to coordinate the work to
complete your source annotation.

STAGE 2: RESEARCH PROCESS:


You will be given time to research your cartoon, focusing on the origin/context, purpose/aim and content of
the image.

STAGE 3: SOURCE ANNOTATION:


Your group needs to annotate your source - highlight the key points, label any people / countries in the
source. This can be done in a selection of ways:
● Hand written: print it off your source, handwrite the annotations and take a photograph.
● Google slide text boxes: annotate using text boxes on a new Google slide doc.
● Use Google Draw - annotate using text boxes on Google Draw.

STAGE 4: RECORDING
● Each pair/three will record a video explanation of the message of your source referring directly to
your annotations and upload it as per your teacher’s instructions.
● In your video, you must refer to the origin, purpose and content of your source.
● Your video should be a maximum of three minutes in length.

STAGE 5: REFLECTION
You will have a separate lesson to reflect on your own process and review the other videos produced. You
are required to consider the positives and the possible additions to at least two other videos.
