Explore Slack
You have learned how to find a co-founder and hire employees for certain roles that you have identified.
You have also learned how to attract talent by pitching right to potential employees.
Now that you will need to collaborate with your team members. How do you do so? There are lots of tools
available in the market today which will help you collaborate with your team members effectively and
efficiently. Here, you will explore one such great tool: Slack.
Instructions:
2. Go to www.slack.com
3. Now, one of you will lead the process. We will refer to that person as the “host”. The host should follow
the below steps to create his/her Slack account:
a. Click the button, “Get Started”
b. Next, click on “Create a new workspace”. A workspace is a shared hub where members
communicate and collaborate with each other. Within your workspace, you’ll have access to
all files, documents, and messages shared by your team members.
c. Enter your email address.
d. Slack will send a confirmation code to the email address you entered. Keep an eye on your
inbox for the email.
e. When the email arrives, enter your confirmation code to continue.
f. Follow the directions to set up your display name, password, and group name.
g. Slack will use your group name to create your workspace url. Click the button, “Continue to
Workspace URL”. You will be taken to the next page where you will given the option to
change your workspace url.
h. Now, click the button, “Create Workspace”. After agreeing to the terms and conditions, you
get taken to the next page where it says that your Slack workspace is created and ready.
4. That's it, you’re in! You can now send invitations to your team members.
5. Now, the host should carry out the following steps to invite his/her team members to join Slack:
a. On your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
b. Select Invite people from the menu.
c. Enter the email ids and full names of your team members.
d. Click Send Invitations button to finish.
Note: Slack is available as a free tool with basic features which include the ones discussed here. For
some special features, there are paid versions available too.
6. How will the rest of you, excluding the hosts, receive and accept the invitation from your host to join
Slack?
a. Check your inbox for an email invitation from Slack.
b. Click Join Now.
c. Enter your full name and optional display name, create a password, and then click Next.
d. You will be able to join your host’s workspace.
e. You can now send messages to your host and the others who are in this workspace.

7. You can create your Channel within your workspace. A channel is where the majority of your team’s
conversations and daily work take place. They can be organized around anything and you can create as
many as you need. In Slack, you can create two types of channels:
o Public Channels
They’re used for conversations open to all members. Anything posted to a public channel is
browsable and searchable by all members, except for Guests of your Slack workspace.
o Private Channels
Foundational Course in Entrepreneurship
They're for discussions that shouldn't be open to your entire workspace. You have to be invited
to join a private channel to view it in Slack. A private channel has a lock icon next to its name.
10. You have 110 minutes to complete this activity. Your facilitator use the remaining 10 minutes to debrief
you about the tool and your performance.
