I.

Objectives
a. The learners should be able to identify how energy is transformed in simple
machines;
b. The learners should be able to describe the transformation of energy
c. The learners demonstrate how sound, heat, light and electricity can be
transformed.

II. Subject Matter

Transformation of electrical energy:
Learners will be able to observe that electricity can produce heat and light.

III. Procedures

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Drill
a. Prayer
b. Exercise
c. Checking of attendance
d. Checking of assignment

2. Review
What was our last topic is all about? We have learned from our previous topic that
current electricity is electricity in motion.

3. Engagement
Sing or watch a song of “Electrical Safety Song”

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
a. Observe and tell that electricity can produce heat and light (provide a video
presentation)

There are many appliances that transform electricity to heat. Electricity moving in
a wire produces heat. The greater the resistance of the wire, the more heat is
produced. The kind of wire, its length and diameter affect the amount of heat
produced.

2. Exploration
Activity:
Organize the examples below to show how the energy has been transformed. Write
your answer in the organizers that follow.

Electric Fan Electric Stove Electric bulb

Microwave Blender Flat iron
Fluorescent lamp Oven Remote control car
Water heater Neon lights Grinder
Electrical polisher Washing machine Incandescent lamp

Electrical Energy Light Energy Mechanical Energy Heat Energy

3. Explanation
When a stream of electrons move through a conductor, the conductor resists their
movement. The energy expanded by the electric current in overcoming the resistance
is transformed into an equivalent amount of heat energy. If the resistance of a
conductor in strong, passage of an electric current is sufficiently high. The resistor
will be heated to incandescence and gives off light. The modern electrical lamp
contains a fine filament of metal tungsten. It offers so much resistance to the passage
of electric current. It becomes highly heated and gives off light.

4. Elaboration
Heat is produced when energy transformation occurs.
The greater the resistance of the wire, the more heat is produced.

Activity: The students will draw how sound, heat, light and electricity can be
transformed and they will explain it.
Material needed:
1 bond paper
1 pencil
1 pack of crayons

C. Concluding Activities
Activity: Observing that electricity can produce heat and light.

Material needed:

1 dry cell
1 flashlight bulb
1 connecting wire
1 switch

Procedures:

1. Construct a simple electric circuit using the given materials.

2. Hold the flashlight bulb for a minute. Observe.
3. Press the switch down. Observe.
4. Leave the switch in “on” position for about five minutes.
5. After five minutes hold the flashlight bulb. Observe.
6. Compare your first and second observations about how you feel when you hold the
flashlight bulb.

Guided Questions:

1. How does the flashlight bulb feel before turning on the light? After the switch has been
turned on for about five minutes, how does the bulb feel?
2. What does current electricity produce? Why?

Let’s remember this

 Heat is produced when energy transformation occurs.

 The greater the resistance of the wire, the more heat is produced.
 Heat is always produced whenever there is an energy transformation. Then heat
energy is always transferred to the environment.

IV. Evaluation
Multiple choice: Underline the letter of the correct answer.
1. The fluorescent lamp gives off light because of
a. Glowing wires called filaments
b. Ultraviolet rays that strike the phosphors
c. Electric current that enters the tube
d. Liquid mercury that changes into vapor.
2. What is always produced when there is energy transformation?
a. Light
b. Heat
c. Chemical
d. Electricity
3. Heat released in the environment may
a. Result in the lowering of air temperature
b. Still be recovered
c. Spread out indefinitely
d. Cause increase in temperature
4. Which of the following DOES NOT release heat to the environment?
a. Burning paper
b. Turning on the radio
c. Boiling water
d. None of the above
5. Why is air pumped out of a light bulb when it in manufactured?
a. To make the filament glow brighter
b. To prevent the hot filament from burning
c. To increase the resistance of filaments
d. To prevent the filament from rusting.
