COMPETENCE 2. EXPLAINS THE PHYSICAL WORLD BASED ON KNOWLEDGE ABOUT LIVING ORGANISMS;
MATTER AND ENERGY; BIODIVERSITY, EARTH AND UNIVERSE.

I. Answer the following multiple-choice questions

1. Heat transfer by conduction occurs when
A. Atoms give off heat in the form of electromagnetic waves.
B. Particles in a fluid move in a cycle.
C. Atoms vibrate and communicate their vibration to neighbor atoms in the vicinity.
D. Particles speed up and travel colliding between each other.

2. The reason why a room is warmed when we light the fireplace is:
A. Hot air convection currents move around the room.
B. Heat is conducted from the fire through the floor.
C. Fire emits radiation, which is absorbed by everything in the room.
D. All of the above.

3. Energy transfer by convection is primarily restricted to:

A. Gases and solids.
B. Solids and liquids.
C. Gases and liquids.
D. Solids, liquids and gases.

4. Heat is:
A. The flow of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
B. The amount of temperature stored in a substance.
C. The collisions of particles in liquids and gases.
D. The energy that exists in a substance. A substance contains heat inside.

5. When you touch a cold piece of ice with your finger, heat flows

B. From your finger to the ice.
C. Both ways.
D. Energy flows in random directions.

6. A material is a good thermal conductor if:

A. It slowly conducts energy away.
B. It quickly conducts energy away.
C. It stores a lot of energy.
D. It loses a lot of energy.

II. Solve the following specific heat capacity problems

1) A sample of aluminum absorbs 50 J of heat, upon which the temperature of the sample
increases from 20°C to 35°C. If the specific heat of aluminum is 0.900 J/g°C. What is the mass
of the sample?

2) Calculate the energy required to increase the temperature of 2kg of water from 20°C to 100°C.
The specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J/kg°C.

3) Calculate the rise in temperature if a 1600 g of gold absorbs 3000 J of energy. The specific
heat capacity of gold is 129 J/kg K.
