COMPOSITE MATERIAL

A composite material is a combination of two

materials with different physical and chemical
properties. When they are combined, they create a
material which is specialized to do a certain job, for
to become stronger, lighter or resistant to electricity.
They can also improve strength and stiffness.

High Strength Good Shear Properties High Strength

High Stiffness + Low Density = High Stiffness

Low Density Good Shear

Properties
4 Types of Composite Material
 Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs)
 Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs)
 Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs)
 Carbon Matrix Composites (CAMCs).

 Why Composite Materials?

-To Improve Fuel Efficiency by reducing

mass of the vehicle.
-To Provide Aerodynamic design.
-To enhance Styling and part
consolidation.

 ADVANTAGES OF
COMPOSITES
Specific Strength and Stiffness
Cost-Effective Fabrication
Fatigue Life
Dimensional Stability
Corrosion Resistance
 disADVANTAGES OF
COMPOSITES

-Composite Material are generally Expensive.

-Manufacturing Methods for shaping composite
materials are often slow and costly.
-Properties of many important composite are
anisotropic- the properties differ depending on the
direction in which they are measured-this may be
an advantage or a disadvantage.

 Importance of Composite materials: -

- Composite can be very strong and stiff, yet

very Light in weight
- Fatigue properties are generally better than for
common engineering metals.
- Toughness is often greater too.
- Composite can be designed that do not corrode
like steel.
- Possible to achieve combinations of properties
not attainable with metals, ceramics or
polymers.

 Properties of composite material

 In selecting a composite material, an optimum
combination of properties is usually sought,
rather than one particular property.

 Fuselage and wings of an aircraft must be

lightweight and be strong, stiff and tough.
 Several fiber reinforced polymers possess this
combination of properties.

 Composite materials are additional versatile.

 Composites make less noise during operation

and provide less vibration

 The tensile strength of composite materials is

4-6 times higher than conventional materials
such as steel, aluminum, etc.
 History of composite in automobile industry
 Why Composite Materials are Being Used in
Automobiles?

It has always been one of the basic things that humans have
asked themselves – How can we improve our products security
wise? And this goes well for our automobile industry. There have
been several inventions and techniques being used time and
again that has focused on improving the security aspects of our
automobiles.

Composite materials, like carbon fiber reinforced plastics, are

effectively coming up as super materials that provide automobiles
with enhanced security features. You may be tempted to ask what
benefits composite materials offer to the automotive industry?

1. Strength

The first and foremost aspect of composite materials is their

enhanced strength. We have always wanted to see materials
integrated into our vehicles that can provide improved safety
against unexpected events like accidents, crash and so.
Composite materials have high tensile strength and thus provide
added robustness to the build of the automobile in whatever
capacity they are used. The durability of the composite materials
can be gauged by the fact that these are able to withstand impact
much greater than what would damage steel structures.
2. Lightweight
Another important property that makes composite materials so
good and viable to use in automobiles is their lightweight nature.
These are almost one-third lighter than aluminum and one-fourth
the weight of steel. This makes them specific so as to create
automobiles which have improved fuel efficiency due to less
weight. Being lightweight also means that manufacturers can also
put added features and components in the vehicles which can
provide more value to them.

3.Resistance to External Features

The composite materials are also effective in providing high

resistance to external features like against corrosion, temperature
extremes and so.

4.Flexible to Be Mould into Any Shape

Composites are composite materials that possess great flexibility

and are thus can be easily molded into several types of complex
shapes easily, providing designers much more freedom and
capability to create complex designs which wouldn’t have been
possible otherwise.
 Composite materials are not making the automobile
industry much better product-wise but are also being
actively used in aerospace, military products and more
industries because of multiple befitting features and
properties.

 Composite materials have found extensive use among

many industries including automotive. Vehicles are
supposed to be lightweight, have low emission and energy
consumption to provide some environmental protection
while having appropriate stiffness and strength to assure
occupant protection. These requirements can be met with
the use of composite materials. Although composites have
been present in the industry for decades, their use in the
automotive sector is moderately new, which requires
development in design and manufacturing processes,
testing, and recycling - this paper indicates the details by
which the automotive industry differs from others. Principal
recycling methods, related legislation, and where recycling
products are used are described. Specific uses of
composite materials that show a high level of
innovativeness are indicated - hybrid and natural
composites, structural batteries, and high-performance
vehicles.

 Use of Composites in different area

1.Composites in Cars: Making
Vehicles Lighter, Safer and
More Fuel-Efficient
-Composite materials may someday have big advantages over
steel in automobile manufacturing. Composites are being
considered to make lighter, safer and more fuel-efficient vehicles.
-A composite is composed of a high-performance fiber (such as
carbon or glass) in a matrix material (epoxy polymer) that when
combined provides enhanced properties compared with the
individual materials by themselves. Carbon-fiber composites
weigh about one-fifth as much as steel, but are as good or better
in terms of stiffness and strength. They also do not rust or corrode
like steel or aluminum, and they could significantly increase
vehicle fuel economy by reducing vehicle weight by as much as
60 percent.

- Composites can be designed to be strong and light to provide

better safety and fuel efficiency.

2.Lowering Costs for Automotive

Composites
Affordability is an important issue in vehicle manufacturing, which
includes factoring in the costs associated with a car’s complete
life-cycle—including manufacturing, operating and disposal costs.

The development of low-cost manufacturing methods for

automotive composites is receiving a lot of attention.

 Application Of Composite Material in

Automobile Industry
Automobile industry always in pursuit of increasing efficiency
without compensating on safety simultaneously.

Efficiency can either be increased by decreasing weight of

automobiles or using more efficient fuels or incorporating suitable
aerodynamic structure.

Of all these alternatives reducing the weight alone inc. efficiency 3

times w/o increasing cost by much.

 SAFETY
-Safety is a major consideration for an automobile.
-Use of composites saved number of lives in accidents.

-613,501 lives between 1960 and 2021 also death rate drops from
87 per million to 28.

-Research by the Rocky Mountain Institute indicates that a fighter

vehicle that is large and better designed can have crash safety
comparable to, or better than, that of similarly sized heavy
vehicle.

-Composite material provides better material for crumple zone.

are methods to manufacture automotive parts in medium to higher
volumes.

-Polymer used as matrix in those applications are UP resins,

 Conclusion: -

-It is concluded that composite materials have a great potential in

automobiles industry in shifting rapidly from metals to composites
but with some limitations and researches. Carbon fiber
reinforcements and latest technological development like forged
composites concept has outclass the conventional materials and
metals.
