Question 1
Read the passage given below in which some words are given in bold type. Then
underline the meaning that is most appropriate to the context for words given in bold
type from 1-10. (10 marks)

When the doctor's four guests heard him talk of his proposed experiment, they
anticipated nothing more wonderful than the murder of a mouse in an air pump, or the
examination of a cobweb by the microscope, or some similar nonsense, with which he
was constantly in the habit of pestering his associates. But without waiting for a reply,
Dr. Heidegger walked across the chamber, and returned with the same heavy sheets of
paper, bound in black leather, which commonly affirmed to be a book of magic.
Undoing the silver fastener he opened the volume, and took from among its black-letter
pages , a rose or what was once a rose, though now the green leaves and crimson petals
had assumed one brownish hue, and the ancient flower seemed ready to crumble to dust
in the doctor's hands.
"This rose," said Dr. Heidegger, with a sigh, "this same withered and crumbling flower,
blossomed five and fifty years ago. It was given me by Sylvia Ward, whose portrait
hangs yonder; and I meant to wear it in my bosom at our wedding. Five and fifty years
it has been treasured between the leaves of this old volume. Now, would you deem it
possible that this rose of half a century could ever bloom again?"
"Nonsense!" said the Widow Wycherley, with a peevish toss of her head. "You might
as well ask whether an old woman's wrinkled face could ever bloom again.

1
"See!" answered Dr. Heidegger. He uncovered the vase, and threw the faded rose into
the water which it contained. At first, it lay lightly on the surface of the fluid, appearing
to imbibe none of its moisture. Soon, however, a singular change began to be visible.
The crushed and dried petals stirred, and assumed a deepening tinge of crimson, as if
the flower were reviving from a deathlike sleep; the slender stalk and twigs of greenery
became green; and there was the rose of half a century, looking as fresh as when Sylvia
Ward had first given it to her lover. It was scarcely full blown; for some of its delicate
red leaves curled modestly around its moist bosom, within which two or three dewdrops
were sparkling.
"That is certainly a very pretty deception,"

Use only one word in each blank. (5 marks)

In the Nazca desert of Southern Peru, you can find the largest picture gallery in the
world. But this is not an ordinary display of art: the drawings, a whole zoo of animals
and birds, are of monster size, laid out on the desert floor.
A giant condor has a wing span of more than 120 meters, a lurking spider is nearly 50
meters long. There is a hummingbird with a vast bill, a curly-tailed monkey, a splashing
whale, and many more birds, fishes and strange plant forms.
Because of their size, you can’t really see the magnificent pictures at ground level. Only
when airborne can you appreciate the whole wriggling, flying menagerie. They are
highly stylized outlines, resembling the shapes which decorate the pottery of Indians

5
who lived around Nazca long ago. They were made by the simple method of removing
the dark stone layer which covers the desert, or pampa, and revealing the light-coloured
sand beneath, The accuracy of the designs was probably achieved by skilful scaling of
much smaller versions.

Southern Peru. These drawings are found on the (2) …………………… floor and
the magnificent (3) ……………………….of the creatures drawn make it not easy

Many men make their living from what they can win from the sea. The life of a
fisherman must be as hazardous as that of a miner, each trying to earn a living from
nature itself. Compare the two. What dangers do they undergo?
It is not only fish that man gains from the sea. Here is an account of diving for pearls.
Manta Diablo is a sea monster that people believed kept guard over the cave where the
pearls were found.
Near the mouth of the cave, the water was very clear. I picked up my basket and sink
stone, took a deep breath and slipped over the side of the canoe, remembering all that
the old man had taught me.
I reached the bottom after about a fathom and a half. I looped my foot in the rope tied
to the sink stone and waited until the bubbles that had risen behind me disappeared so
that I could find the bed of shells I had noticed from above. The bed was five steps away
from the mouth of the cave and it was necessary to walk carefully in the sand.
The shells were the largest I had ever seen. They were half the length of my arm and
thick as through my body and were covered with weed that looked like woman’s hair.
I reached the nearest which seemed to be easier than the others and started working with
my knife quite hard. A school of fish that began to swim across the way disturbed my
view and I failed to pry the shell loose before my lungs began to hurt and I had to go
up.
In my second dive, I had no sooner reached the bottom than a shadow fell across the
bed, where I was working. It was the shadow of a grey shark one of the friendly ones.
But by the time he had drifted my breath was gone.
I dived six times more and worked quickly each time I went down, hacking away with
my sharp knife at the base of the big shell where it was anchored to the rock. But it had

6
been growing there for many years since long before I was born I suppose and it would
not come out of its home.
By this time it was late in the afternoon and the light was poor. I was in terrible pain
with my hands bleeding and my eyes half-blind with salt from the sea. I sat in the canoe
and thought of all the hours I had wasted for nothing. I thought of Sevillano and the
great pearl he had found or said to have found, in the Gulf of Persia.
