Implementation of the
Senior High School Program

DepEd has implemented the senior high school program,

a new level of basic education made up of grades 11 and 12,
across the country in June 2016. Students in the Philippines
who have not yet graduated from high school are required to
take this program before proceeding to college. The
implementation of the senior high school program can both
serve as a benefit and a hindrance.

The implementation of the senior high school program

means that you have to spend 2 more years in high school,
which makes it even harder for financially unfortunate students
to graduate. The additional length might also diminish the
students’ interest to study. Furthermore, in order to run the
system, the government-funded schools need a lot of money
that might be put to better use elsewhere. On the other hand,
senior high school seeks to prepare students by providing them
with the global knowledge, skills, and competencies essential
for successful career pathways in the future. Those 2 extra
school years also give us more time to think about what we
really want to be and do in the future. By ensuring that the
student is prepared for employment, entrepreneurship, or
higher study, senior high school completes the fundamentals of
education.

The implementation of the senior high school program

might be viewed as something that is not absolutely necessary
and might even be viewed as a hindrance by some people, but
it helped and continues to help us achieve progress in terms of
education and produce more competitive and more prepared
students.
