PARAGRAPH: A paragraph is a group of sentences which are related and
support one main idea. A paragraph should focus on a single topic or idea.
To identify a paragraph, one must take note of its features, which include;
1. THE TOPIC SENTENCE; The topic sentence reveals what the paragraph
is about. It gives the reader a sense of direction and not necessarily
giving a summary of the information given in the paragraph. Its usually
at the beginning of a paragraph. Every paragraph should include a tpic
sentence.
2. INDENTED; This is a short distance from the margin. It provides the
reader with a sense of continuity. It signals readers that they are about
to dive into a new topic or start a new section of reading content.
3. UNITY; All sentences or supporting details are about one topic
signifying unity. In other words, all the sentences must refer to the
main idea or topic in the paragraph. Sentences are irrelevant when
they do not adhere to the rest of the sentences or do not belong in the
paragraph.
4. CONCLUDING SENTENCE; Evaluates, summarizes, or restates the most
significant ideas of the paragraph. The concluding sentence might be a
summary of the previous discussion and not include any new
information.
