The procedures in this guide must be observed during installation, operation, service and
repair of this equipment. Failure to comply with these procedures violates safety standards
of design, manufacture and intended use of this equipment. Pole Star Space Applications

Unit Description
The system consists of a SkyWave DMR200L Inmarsat D+ satellite transceiver with integral
GPS receiver, a Breakout box and two alert activation points. In normal operation the
transceiver sends periodic position reports. When either alert button is pressed the unit
sends security alert messages at 30 minute intervals until the unit is reset by a command
sent via the PurpleFinder system. The unit requires a 24V DC supply with emergency back-
up. Note: the unit must NOT be painted as this may inhibit transmission / reception
of satellite signals.

Installation
Installation of this unit should be undertaken in conjunction with the Company Security Officer (CSO).
The system is supplied with an Installation checklist, which should be followed during installation. To initiate
the warranty, each step of the installation should be checked off on the checklist on completion. This form
should then be returned to Pole Star or to the agent that supplied the equipment.

For reference the dimensions of the Breakout box are shown in Figure 7.

1. Select a suitable location for the transceiver installation, taking into consideration the following:

a. The transceiver requires a clear and unobstructed view of the sky in order to
communicate with the Inmarsat and GPS satellite constellations.

b. Obstructions within the look angle range (see figure 2) are unavoidable in most marine
installations, but the important thing is to minimise them. As a rule of thumb, it is useful to
apply the rule: Safe distance = 29 x diameter of obstruction e.g. for a pole of 10cm
diameter, the safe distance is 29 x 0.1 = 2.9 metres. This rule ensures that the obstruction
covers no greater than 2 degrees arc.

c. The transceiver must be a minimum of 2 metres from any other communication system
and further if possible.

d. The transceiver should NOT be in the line of sight of any high-powered transmission
equipment such as radar scanners.

e. The system should not be installed in any areas that are designated as ‘hazardous zones’.

f. The length of the supplied cable from the transceiver to the Breakout box is 25m. If this
cable is extended, the total length should not exceed 40m.

Figure 2 - Transceiver mounting and look angles

2. Select a suitable location for the Breakout box. It should be installed in an internal, dry location. A typical
location is a power distribution cabinet, close to the 24V DC power source. Temporarily remove the 2A
fuse from the fuse holder marked ‘F2A’ and store in a safe place. Do not attach the Breakout box to
the power supply yet.

3. Securely fasten the transceiver mounting bracket to the vessel superstructure and mount the
transceiver on the bracket using the 4 screws and nylock nuts provided. Attach the connector to the
base of the transceiver and seal it with self amalgamating tape or silicone sealant. Run the 8-core
cable from the transceiver to the Breakout box, through the gland in the Breakout box, and attach the
Figure 7 - Breakout box dimensions wires to the colour coded terminal block as shown in figure 3.

4. Select a suitable location for the two alert activation points. One must be situated in the bridge. The
alert loop wiring configuration is shown in figure 3. Line Drawings
Note: The activation points are identified as Activation Point 1 (ALERT LOOP 1) and
Activation Point 2 (ALERT LOOP 2) on alert notifications and on the PurpleFinder website.

5. Assemble and install the alert activation points as shown in figure 6. Run the 2-core cables between
the alert activation points and the Breakout box, and attach them to the Breakout box as shown in
figure 3.

6. Ensure that the fuse has been removed from the fuse holder marked ‘F2A’ (see figure 3) and stored
safely. Connect the unit to the vessel’s backed-up 24V DC power supply as shown in figure 3, and
replace the fuse in the fuse holder to power the unit up. The red LED should light initially, followed by
the green LED a few seconds afterwards (see ‘Breakout box LED diagnostics’ below).

7. The unit should send a position report approximately 10 minutes after power up. Check with the CSO or
agent that this has been received.

8. When installation is complete, BOTH alert activation points should be tested individually. These tests
should be done in conjunction with the CSO or agent, as they will need to check and reset the alerts.

9. Ensure that the warranty checklist is fully completed and returned to Pole Star Space Applications at the
address indicated.

System Operation
The DSAS-L system operates automatically and requires no SSO intervention. When the satellite
transceiver unit is powered up, the “STAT” and “ERR” LEDs should light for approximately 2 seconds
then go out. In normal operation, the “STAT” LED flashes about once every eight seconds (refer to
Section - Satellite Transceiver LED Diagnostics).

The red LED on the Breakout box should be on continuously. The green light flashes when the
transceiver is acquiring a GPS fix, and stays on continuously when the unit has a valid fix. In normal
operation both LEDs should be on continuously.

When pressed for at least 1 second, each alert activation point triggers the unit to switch to alert
reporting mode, at a rate of 1 alert position report every 30 minutes.

Maintenance
Figure 6 - Alert activation point assembly & dimensions
The system should be tested periodically in conjunction with the CSO or agent. Contact them for
further details.
