Topic o Preparing potatoes for Osmosis and Diffusion Lab o Potato Core Example Problem o Water Potential Problems Worksheet Objectives o ENE-2.H, After instruction TSWBAT explain how concentration gradients affect the movement of molecules across membranes with 80% accuracy on an end of unit exam. o ENE-2.I, After instruction TSWBAT explain how osmoregulatory mechanisms contribute to the health and survival of organisms with 80% accuracy on an end of unit exam. Teaching Procedures o Anticipatory Set (3 min) Ask the students to explain the video from yesterday The U-shaped tube video where water flowed towards the higher solute concentration side Have the students explain to you how osmosis deals with free water, and when there is a solute present free water turns into bound water which therefore cannot act on the system This then results in water flowing from the low-concentration solute side to the high-concentration solute side as it did in the video o Independent Practice 1 (10 min) Have the students choose 6 potato cubes and get 6 cups Have the students label one cup of distilled water, the next 0.2M, the next 0.4M, the next 0.6M, the next, 0.8M, and finally the last cup of 1.0M sucrose Have students record the weight of each potato they are going to place in each cup Have the students pour the respective solution into the appropriate cup just so the potato cube is fully covered Have students cover the top of the cup with parafilm to prevent the evaporation of water Have students put all cups in the back of the classroom so they will not be disturbed over the next day o Development 1 (8 min) Use the potato core example presentation to explain using a graph to find out the water potential of a potato cell Go through each slide and have the students take notes Tell them this is what they are trying to make for the Osmosis and Diffusion lab o Independent Practice 2 (20 min) Pass out the Water Potential Problems worksheet Tell the students they can work quietly with the person next to them Walk around as the students work to make sure they are on task and answer any questions they may have o Closure (3 min) Ask the students what would happen to the water potential of a potato cell if we left it out to dry It would decrease because as more water left the cell the concentration of the solute will increase therefore being less free water and therefore less water potential Materials o 100 mL of Distilled water o 100 mL of 0.2 M Sucrose o 100 mL of 0.4 M Sucrose o 100 mL of 0.6 M Sucrose o 100 mL of 0.8 M Sucrose o 100 mL of 1.0 M Sucrose o 30 small cups o 30 potato cores o Scale o Potato Core Example Presentation o Water Potential Problems Worksheet Adaptations o None Evaluation o Formative Water Potential Practice Problems o Summative There will be an end of unit exam where students will demonstrate their knowledge of osmosis, diffusion, and how osmoregulatory mechanisms help maintain homeostasis in organisms Reflection o Did the students understand the potato core example? Was there any confusion on a specific part? How can these misunderstandings be corrected? Is there a video that can be posted so students can refer to it to help their understanding?
