Activity 1 - three states of matter

Procedure The teacher talks to the class about the water cycle. He/she depicts
the stages of the cycle on the board while telling the class about what
happens to the water in each stage. Evaporation - gas

Condensation - liquid

Precipitation

(Collection)

Experiment 1:

To illustrate the water cycle the teacher boils water in a pot and holds
a lid approx. 50cm over the pot, so that the steam reaches it and
condenses back into water again.

The students have to make their own drawings of the water cycle.

The teacher can also choose to show the class a video of the water
cycle (eg. http://youtu.be/RayAm2Uigdc)

Experiment 2:

Conduct an experiment to show the class how the water cycle works.
Hand out worksheet 1 before setting up the experiment. Let the
students carry it out together in groups, following the instructions on
the worksheet, if you have enough aquariums. Otherwise let them tell
you (or another student) how to do it and set up one aquarium for all
to share.

They have to make a hypothesis now and reach a conclusion after one
week.

Experiment 3:

Leave a glass with water on the windowsill worksheet 2

They have to make a hypothesis now and reach a conclusion after one
week (next lesson).

Use the INSIDE/OUTSIDE CIRCLE (cooperative learning) and the two

worksheets to get the students to tell each other about their
hypothesis.

This is a good activity for students to share information in an exciting

way.

1. Students stand in two concentric circles around the classroom.

The ones in the inside circle face out, facing a learner standing
on the outside circle.
2. Students from the inside circle share something with their
partners on the outside circle.
3. Then they switch roles; the outside circle students now share
while their partners listen.
4. Students rotate to work with new partners – rotate four people
ahead to a new partner – vary by changing the number of
positions advanced or switch the direction of the rotation; class
counts aloud the number of positions they are moving so
everyone knows when to stop. “One, two, THREE!” (Movement
energises students.)
