Precision Teaching – Spelling Example

Heena’s Pre-Intervention Assessment

Heena is in year 2 and she finds it very difficult to spell some of the words on the year 2 Common
Exception Words list. The teacher has undertaken a spelling test assessment using the Common
Exception Words list for year 2, and the results are below.

after ✔ every move whole

again everybody Mr who

any ✔ eye Mrs wild

bath fast ✔ old ✔ would

beautiful father only

behind find ✔ parents

because floor pass ✔

child ✔ half plant ✔

children hold ✔ poor

Christmas hour pretty

class ✔ improve prove

climb kind ✔ should

clothes last steak

could many sugar

The words Heena knows how to spell confidently are ticked, and the ones she does not know how to
spell are left blank.
This assessment allows the teacher to see what words to work on as part of the five words for the
Precision Teaching intervention. The teacher will pick three words that have been ticked (spelt correctly),
and two words that have not been ticked (spelt incorrectly), and put them into the Probe Sheet grid.
This will be the start of the intervention.

Precision Teaching – Spelling Example
Heena’s Probe Sheet
The teacher has picked the first three words Heena could confidently spell correctly, which were ‘after’,
‘any’ and ‘child’, and the first two words she could not spell, which were ‘again’ and ‘bath’. These are
placed randomly throughout the table. The teacher then worked with Heena on spelling the words she
found difficult, using fun and engaging activities.
At the end of the session, Heena was tested using a spelling test made up of these 5 words, writing
down as many words she could in one minute. The teacher tracked how many she could spell correctly
and how many she spelt incorrectly.

after any bath again child

child after any bath again

any bath again child after

bath again child after any

again child after any bath

child bath after again any

after child again any bath

Comments: Heena sometimes still puts an ‘r’ sound in ‘bath’ – add reminder to her spelling mat in
the classroom.

results from the 1-minute spelling test at the bottom. These results have then been joined up with
a straight line to show Heena’s progress in the number of incorrect responses compared to correct
responses. When Heena has mastered this set of words with a 90% correct response rate, her teacher
will go back to the original assessment of common exception words and chose new words to add to
the probe sheet, repeating the process again. If, after 3-4 days, Heena does not make progress, refer
back to Step 8 of the Spelling Procedure sheet.
