Executive Summary

A survey about the improper waste disposal in the households among Pio Duran was conducted during the
months of December up to early January. Households from different barangays were encouraged to take part on
the survey and share their insights about the issue in the improper waste disposal within the area.

The survey was developed by a group of Lorenzonian students from San Lorenzo Academy Incorporated in
relation to their final output in their subject. The survey was sent by the developer/s 1 questionnaire per
household and was conducted through the form of paper and pencil survey.

Respondents were given forms and had to answer questions about improper waste disposal in their area. The
questions contained multiple choices\responses, ratings and open ended questions.

A total of 20 respondents coming from different households and barangay have participated in the survey and
shared their insights and opinions regarding the issue about improper waste disposal within the area of Pio
Duran.

From the gathered data, majority of the respondents are aware of the possible effects of improper waste disposal
but only the 70% of them practices it often while the remaining 30% rarely observes proper waste disposal
within their household.

67% of them dispose their trash as the garbage truck picks them up. 19% dispose their waste by throwing it by
the compost pit and the remaining 14% have answered that they dispose their waste by burning it.

In terms of the reason behind improper waste disposal 46% of them have responded that it is because of
unawareness or lack of knowledge about the issue. 36% answered that it’s because of laziness in disposing and
segregating trash properly. 9% answered that people have insufficient funds to buy bins for the different
classifications of their wastes and the other 9% have answered other reasons on improper waste disposal.

From the data collected based from the results of the survey, various recommendation might possibly help about
minimizing the results of improper waste disposal:

•Seminars about proper disposal of waste

•Composts

•Shredding compost pit cans in the community


Background and Objectives
Methodology

The survey was conducted through the use of forms or paper and pencil survey, personally approaching
individuals. Respondents were given individuals copies of the survey containing questions about the improper
waste disposal within the area of Pio Duran.

Types of Questions Used;

I. Close Ended Questions


-Respondents were asked on how often and whether they practice proper waste disposal or
not. Items from the close ended questions are answerable by ‘yes’ and ‘no’.

II. Contingency Questions

-If the respondents answers that improper waste disposal is present within
their community or household. They are asked to rate the severity on a scale
of 1 to 5 where one is the lowest(good) and five is the highest(most severe).

III. Multiple Response\Choice Question

-Questions involve a situation wherein respondents may choose one or more

answer\s within the given set of choices.

IV. Open Ended Questions


-Questions asks respondeds regarding their opinion on implementing

Penalties about improper waste disposal.

The survey was conducted in different barangays and households in Pio Duran. The survey accumulated 20
responses in total.

The survey accumulated 20 responses from different households and barangays. Responses includes
participant’s insights about the improper waste disposal in their household and barangay in Pio Duran.

- A 100% of the respondents have answer that improper waste disposal should have penalties and sanctions.
Reasons include that improper waste disposal affects the environment and also the health of the citizens. It is a
duty to take care of the environment and maintain its cleanliness that’s why proper waste disposal should be
practiced.

Among the 20 individuals who responded in the survey, 100% of the respondents are aware of the possible
effect of improper waste disposal but only the 70% of them practices it often while the 30% only pratice proper
waste disposal sometimes.

67% of them dispose their waste when the garbage truck picks them up. 19% dispose their waste by throwing it
by the compost pit and 14% of the respondents dispose their waste by burning it.
The answers regarding the reason behind improper waste disposal have mixed reviews. 46% of them have
responded that the reason behind improper waste disposal is unawareness or lack of knowledge about the issue.
36% of them has answered that its because of laziness in disposing and segregating trash properly. 9% answered
that people have insufficient funds to buy bins for the different classifications of their wastes and the other 9%
have answered other reasons on improper waste disposal.

70% of the respondents practice proper waste disposal in their household and in their community,While the
remaining 30% rarely obsereves proper waste disposal in their community and household.

Conclusion

1. There are many reasons that occur from different households of Pio Duran regarding improper waste
disposal. An example is insufficient funds to buy bins, which makes living in Pio Duran greatly involves
financial and economic aspects. Most especially, improper waste disposal is a big issue at the moment.
Aside from this, the residents based from the data gathered 100% of them are aware of the issue in
disposing garbage properly but only 70% of them practice proper handling of wastes while 30% does
not\rarely practices proper disposal of waste.
2. The methods used by the residents in disposing their waste includes burning their trash, practice simple
composting and gets picked up by the garbage truck.
3. Improper waste management of a household is the main factor of the problem that greatly affects the
entirety of Pio Duran. If the people knows how to maintain their surroundings, to dispose their garbage
knowingly and properly make use of these wastes, then the problem may be lessened.Improper waste
management greatly affects the drainage of a barangay as garbage may block flowing waters and cause
flooding and can also be a cause of a major health outbreak and affect the economics of the area.

Recommendations

1. A compost pit with a shredder will greatly improve the poor waste management. This will help reduce
the carbon footprint and pollution present within the households and barangays.
2. Conducting a seminar that discusses on how to manipulate the compost shredder and the compost pit.
3. Practicing simple composting may also help and will be used for the sustainability of the soil and the
environment.
