TITLE:

Eggshells and Plastic Laminates as An Additional Aggregate to the Coastal Concrete Barriers

RATIONALE:

All over the country, concrete is widely used for contriving new structures such as
buildings, bridges, and dams. For this reason, it has been the conventional method of making
construction materials. Sustainable construction materials have become an interest in the
engineering community to support the inevitable impact of environmental issues.
As we move to a more advanced innovation for construction, might as well take the chance to
repurpose waste materials into the field of engineering- infrastructures must also move along
with the future. Considering the severity of our landfills and its environmental impact and poor
waste management to some areas in the country repurposing such materials are one of the
options engineers consider for a more sustainable construction.
Based on the study conducted by Baguhin, I., and Cabahug, R., entitled “Investigation on Load-
bearing CHB Reinforced with Coconut Coir Fiber, the concrete has some voids on it that may be
filled by different fibers materials. With this study as reference, the research study postulated that
eggshells and plastics laminates may have the same effect as one of the solutions to fill the voids
on the concrete. Plastic and food waste such as eggshells and plastic laminates are common
disposals to almost every household and establishments, since construction of new building
arises with the country’s advancement it is beneficial to test the use of eggshells and plastic to
our construction materials. For now, this study will focus on the coastal concrete barrier and add
an additional strength to the materials and the barrier itself.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:

This study aims to analyze the effects of eggshells and plastic laminates as an
additional aggregate to the concrete mix to be used in coastal concrete barriers.
Specifically, the students aim to answer the following questions:
1. Does the eggshells and plastic laminates have a significant effect on the coastal concrete
barriers in terms of:
a. Compressive strength
b. Ductility and Elasticity
c. Hardness
d. Creep Resistance
2. Does the additional aggregates has a significant effect to the heat resistance of the coastal
concrete barrier?
3. Does the eggshells and plastic laminates has a significant effect on the durability of the coastal
concrete barrier?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS:

The main purpose of this study is to provide new sustainable way of making concrete
coastal barriers and how waste materials such as eggshells and plastic laminate affect the
durability of the concrete coastal barrier.
This study is only applicable on the coastal concrete barrier that may be found along the coastal
area and is saturated on the seawater. This study focuses on the different mechanical properties
of the concrete such as the compressive strength, ductility, elasticity, hardness and creep
resistance. The materials to be focused on this study is only the additional aggregates namely, the
eggshells and plastic laminates that will be used on the 1:3:3 concrete mix ratio.
The study is limited only on the available materials that may use to build a coastal concrete
barrier. The research study will also focus on the mechanical properties of the concrete not on
the physical properties.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

The significance of the study for the engineering community is it will open up new
possibilities in terms of making concrete mixture for concrete barriers using waste materials such
as egg shells and plastic laminates. It will contribute to the waste management in many areas and
will help regulate the severe landfill pollution. For engineers, it may help them make new
method of making concrete mixture, improve concrete strength and versatility of engineering
materials specifically concrete coastal barriers, and create a more sustainable way of
construction. For the household community, it may help families to repurpose their food waste
and plastic garbage into a more useful material. For the future studies aligned with this research
study, it may serve as the basis for future related researches for sustainable construction methods
using waste materials as an alternative for conventional ones. For the environment, it may help
ease the rising environmental impact towards human livelihood and ecosystem.
