PHILIPPINE THEATER
• Production range from original plays with Philippine themes and
settings to renowned theatre classics from past centuries to
contemporary musicals from Broadway or London’s West End.
• Theater is where a story acted out on stage by actors portraying the
characters bringing them to life and developing the plot through
DIALOGUE, ACTIONS, MUSIC, SONG and DANCE.
• The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) founded in
1967 and Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theatre company of the
Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1987.
• Multi awarded theatre actress and singer Lea Salonga began her
career as child lead in production of Repertory Philippines
• From there she went on to become an international stage superstar
in the lead role Kim in Miss Saigon - putting the Philippines on the
world map in terms of Theater talent.
Elements of Art applied to an original performance are the
following:
Sound and Music
• incorporating sound recording and editing techniques available
using applications for laptop and android phones.
Gesture,Movement and Dance
• incorporating dance styles
Costume, Mask, Make up and Accessories
• incorporating art techniques such as painting, simple sculpture
and industrial designs.
Spectacle
• creating a striking even awe inspiring effect on stage through the
use of lighting, costumes, sound, music, and special effects.

Theatre
•is a collaborative form of performing art that
uses live performers, typically actors or
actresses, to present the experience of a real or
imagined event before a live audience in a
specific place, often a stage. The performers may
communicate this experience to the audience
through combinations of gesture, speech, song,
music, and dance.
Elements of art such as painted
scenery and stagecraft such as
lighting are used to enhance the
physicality, presence and
immediacy of the experience.
Elements of Art as Applied to an Original
Performance:
Sound and Music
• incorporating sound recording and editing
techniques available using applications for desktop or
laptop computers, tablets and android phone.
Gesture, Movement, and Dance
• incorporating appropriate dance styles technique in a
certain scene that suit to the music.
Elements of Art as Applied to an Original

Costume, Mask, Makeup, and Accessories
• incorporating art techniques such as painting, paper
mache, assemblage, simple sculpture, and industrial
design.
Spectacle
• creating a striking, even awe-inspiring effect on stage
through the use of lighting, sound, music, costumes,
dance and special effects.

Roles in Stage Production in The Philippine Theater
Producer
- a person who takes place the play from a mere concept
to an actual finished presentation.
Director
- the overall artistic coordinator of the entire production.
Playwright
- the writer of a script is more specifically called
playwright.
Roles in Stage Production in The Philippine Theater
Set Designer
- the concept and creation of the physical stage setup.
Costume Designer
- the one who decides what attire will not only give the
audience a clear sense of setting.
Makeup Director
- is brought in to plan the hairstyles and makeup to
complement the costumes.

Choreographer
- plans out all the dance steps to suit the music, but also
rehearses the actors until they are able to perform the
dance skillfully.
Sound Designer
- serves as a vital role in creating and enhancing the
atmosphere of the performance.

Philippine Theater Groups
Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA)
• a theatrical association of artists and educators,
founded by Cecile Guidote-Alvarez in April 7, 1967.
• It is known for creating performances that from
Philippine myths and legends, to commentaries that
mirrors and reflects the current social and political
issues.
• Notable performances are (e.g. Caredivas,2011;
Pamana, 2013; Rak of Aegis, 2014)

Tanghalang Pilipino
•envisions raising Philippine theatre to heights of
professional and artistic excellence, dedicated to
developing and training actors, playwrights and
designers with special emphasis in the
production of original Filipino plays. (e.g.
Ibalong, Noli, William)
Philippine Theater Groups
Repertory Philippines
• one of the most respected theater companies in the
country, was founded 1967 by a handful of Filipino
artists on the initiative of theater director Zenaida
Amador, together with actress Baby Barredo, Amador
established Repertory Philippines. (e.g. Little Women,
Alice in Wonderland, A Portrait of the Artist as
Filipino).
• Lea Salonga, in fact, started her career as a child actress
in productions of Repertory Philippines.

Trumpets
•are known for their grand production of
originally written musical plays which focus on
good values for children and the whole family.
(e.g. Joseph the Dreamer, N.O.A.H, The Bluebird
of Happiness)
