BRIEF INTRODUCTION
• The theater is one of the major art forms that bring together all the other forms of art. Painting,
sculpture, installation art, music, dance, literature, even computer arts/digital arts can show
in a single production. The story is acted out on stage/performance area, by actors portraying
their characters, bringing them to life, and developing the plot through dialogue, actions, songs,
and dance.
• The Philippines has a rich and thriving theater industry that you may be interested to venture
into the future. Productions range from original plays with Philippine themes and settings, to
renowned theater classics from past centuries, to contemporary musicals from Broadway or
London’s West End. This module is an overview of some of the more prominent theater and
performing groups in the country and their major productions.

1. Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA)

https://www.facebook.com/PETATHEATER/
2. Repertory Philippines https://repertoryphilippines.ph/
Trumpets https://www.facebook.com/trumpetsinc/

• Modern theatre groups continued to express the distinctly Philippines interpretation of both
originally written plays as well as adaptations of famous works translated into Filipino. Some of
those are Tanghalang Pilipino (TP), New Voice Company (NVC), and Atlantis Productions.

Tanghalang Pilipino (1987) was established by Felix “Nonon” Padilla. It

wishes to develop and train actors, playwrights, and designers with
special emphasis on the production of original Filipino plays. By staging
plays from the repertoire of the Philippine past and plays in translation
from other countries, TP hopes to bring to the experience of both artists
and audience the best of Philippine and global theatre tradition. Some
of their successful productions are Sandosenang Sapatos, Ibalong, and
Mga Ama, Mga Anak.

New Voice Company (1994) was established by their Executive Director

Monique Wilson. It is marked as the most political, social, and feminist
theater group in the country that deals with contemporary political and
social issues.

2
It is driven by a vision: to produce theatre that enlightens, inspires, educates, informs, and incites to
action - to create theatre that becomes a powerful catalyst for change and a necessary tool for social
transformation - theatre that awakens. It dealt with issues ranging from women's rights, sexuality, incest,
globalization, gender inequality, sexual harassment, homosexuality, poverty, oppression, and violence
against women, among others - moves us to act rather than talk.
