*Analysis
MUSICAL THEATER
Musical Theater- is a form of theatrical performance. Typically, it integrates songs and
dances, spoken and sung dialogue on top of the components of theater such as
direction, libretto, set design, and acting.
Musical theater is a type of performance that is different
from opera because it does not just focus on the music,
but also pays attention to the other parts of the
performance, such as the acting and dancing to tell a
story.

ORIGIN OF MUSICAL THEATER:

Musical theatre has roots in various theatrical traditions. Its origins
can be traced back to the 19th century when musical
entertainments were popular in America and Britain. Britain and
America were two thriving centers that nurtured musicals.

When musical theater first started becoming popular in modern

times, it was called "musicals". They were performed in places
where people went for entertainment, like theaters or concert halls.

In the United States, the “first musical" is often considered to

be The Black Crook, which premiered in New York City in 1866.
It combined elements of dance, drama, and music, and was a
huge success.

Many structural elements were established by the works of Gilbert and Sullivan in Britain
and those of Harrigan and Hart in America. Some of the most esteemed musicals
include:

West Side Story (1957) The Fantasticks (1960) A Chorus Line (1975) Les Misérables (1985),

The Phantom of the The Producers (2001) Wicked (2003) Hamilton (2015)
Opera (1986)

West Side Story demonstrates racial tensions in post-war

United States, in which two lovers are caught between the
power struggles of gangs. The musical has an excellent
choreographic display of a staged conflict between the
rival gangs.

Les Miserables follows the story of ex-convict Jean

Valjean whose life changed when a priest shows him
kindness after he steals bread. He pays it forward by
showing kindness to Fantine, a prostitute. When
Fantine dies, Valjean rescues her child named Cosette
and raises her as an orphan, and protects her until he
dies. Cosette falls in love with Marius, one of the
leaders of protest movements in France. Jean Valjean
also presents the obsession of police officer Javert, who cannot come to terms with
Valjean's transformation as a changed man and so takes away his own life.

Do you hear the People Sing and At the End of the Day are some of the examples of
excellent ensemble performance whenever Les Miserables is staged in Broadway and
elsewhere.

Lea Salonga is one Filipino artist who attained

international status on both London's west and
Broadway. She is the first Filipina to have won various
international awards for a single role. In the 10th
anniversary concert production of "Les Misérables",
Lea Salonga played the role of Eponine and sang
several songs, including On My Own and A Little Fall
of Rain. She also played the lead role of Kim in the
original West End and Broadway productions of "Miss
Saigon" where she sang one of its famous songs I'd
Give My Life for You and Sun and Moon.

ELEMENTS OF A MUSICAL THEATER:

1. Libretto - music and lyrics of sung dialogue including the
musical arrangement; spoken dialogue
2. Performance - gestures, body language, and facial
expressions of actors; includes choreography of dance
numbers and stylized movements
3. Set Design - constructed sets, props, and costume and
makeup of actors
4. Lighting Design - choosing the appropriate direction, color,
and quality of light
5. Sound Design-designing the sound environment of the
musical
6. Directing-putting it all together in the scene; blocking human
and non-animate figures in the stage

PHILIPPINE CONTEXT

Repertory Philippines often stages musicals from the United

States and United Kingdom. Some of the performances they
have staged include West Side Story and The Man from La
Mancha. The musicals of the Repertory Philippines are
staged in a proscenium stage, complete with an orchestra.
PETA or the Philippine Educational Theater Association is
a non-profit organization in the Philippines that produces
socially relevant and culturally significant plays and musicals.
They also create original musicals for the stage. Aside from
psychologically realist plays, with contemporary issues. PETA
is also known for musicals that engage with contemporary
issues. Among these include the national and local elections,
climate change, to name a few. Vincent De Jesus counts
among the best musical and composers for PETA musicals.

MUSICAL THEATER TODAY:

Musical theatre today is a diverse and constantly evolving art

form that combines music, dance, and drama to tell stories
and entertain audiences.

Musical theatre productions today often feature cutting-edge

technology, elaborate sets, and dazzling visual effects that
enhance the storytelling experience. Musicals also frequently
incorporate a wide range of musical genres, from traditional
Broadway show tunes to contemporary pop, rock, and hip-hop.

Additionally, musical theatre has become increasingly inclusive and diverse, with more
representation of underrepresented groups in casting, storytelling, and production.
Overall, musical theatre today is a vibrant and dynamic art form that continues to push
boundaries and break new ground in storytelling and entertainment.

*Abstraction
