Chapter III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter provides the research design and statistical treatment used in the study. Likewise,
this identifies the respondents and the sampling techniques employed. Adopted for the
instrument and data gathering procedures complete the research procedure utilized.

Research Design

The research will use descriptive assessment which is a quantitative approach to assess the
competency level of the students in performing diesel engine tune in terms of set injection
timing, install injection pump, inspect injection timing, bleed Injection system components, and
conduct compression testing. Descriptive assessment intends to measure a competency using
various task example performance task and paper and pencil task. In this study the researchers
use rubrics to examine their competency level in performing diesel engine tune up.

Research locale

The study was conducted in one of the private schools in Sariaya, Quezon, namely College of
Sciences, Technology and Communications, Inc. (CSTC, Inc.). It is a training institution
accredited by TESDA that offers Technical-Vocational Education and training Programs (TVET)
under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the
Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
Because of its commitment to being a premier learning community where students build a
balance between academic competence, technical brilliance, and professional experience, and
emerge as socially responsible persons, The CSTC, Inc. was selected as the study’s primary
research location.

The CSTC, Inc. wanted to help students meet the challenge of workplace competency and
company productivity by offering leadership and connections. Through its talented and
committed instructors, CSTC, Inc. aims to provide the BEST in order to generate the BEST in
the students and provide the BEST in business and industry-focused courses.

Research population and sample

The researchers intends to conduct the study on the Senior High School department of
CSTC. Inc who are currently enrolled in Industrial Arts and Automotive (IAA) strand. There are
110 IAA students who are enrolled for the academic year. 2022-2023 .The researcher will select
(50) respondents as advised on Raosoft Sample size Calculator.

Research instrument

The instrument was adopted from the competency-based learning material in module titled
Performing Diesel Engine Tune Up,page 2,from Technical Education and Skills Development
Authority (TESDA).

The performance criteria was composed of respondents’ level of competence in diesel engine
tune-up that was divided into four (4) categories such as follows:Set and install injection pump
to engine ,inspect injection timing, bleed injection system components and conduct compression
testing . These, all in all, were composed of 14 items, which the researchers answered by
observing and putting a check in each statement. The researchers will apply a 4- point Likert
scale, which is: (4) Always, (3) Sometimes, (2) Often, (1) Never.

Data gathering Procedure

When acquiring and managing the data required to complete the current study, the
researcher will take a number of procedures into consideration. Before the researcher will
analyze the competency level in performing diesel engine tune-up the researchers will
create a letter of permission addressed to the head of Senior High School Department in
the College of Sciences, Technology, and Communication Inc. in Sariaya, Quezon to gather
the pertinent data and to the respondents who performing deisel engine tune-up.

Statistical Treatment of Data

After all the necessary data had been gathered, it was tallied, tabulated, analyzedAnd
interpreted using the most appropriate statistical treatment. To answer the questions posed in this
study, the statistical tool was applied on the Collected data.

1.Mean Percentage Score

This statistical tool will be used to determine the competency level of the respondents in
performing diesel engine tune up as concerns to the following core competencies (a) set injection
timing; (b) install injection pump; (c) inspect injection timing;. The formula is shown below:

MS =(Total Raw Score)/(No.of Students)

MPS =MS/(No.of Items) x 100

Where:

I – No. of Items

S – No. of Students
TRS – Total Raw Score
