Chapter I

A. Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought changes not only in

our country, but to the whole world. And one thing that was

affected the most is the education system. Almost instantly

after the government put the whole world on lockdown,

schools in the Philippines were forced to close their doors

and end the school year because of the virus threat.

But even with the pandemic threat, the Department of

Education found ways to still continue the learning of the

students. They came up with two ideas, online learning in

which you would need a good internet because you will be

learning via a Zoom meeting or through the Google Meet

application. And the other alternative way will be the

modular learning wherein you will be given printed hand-outs

to be picked-up in the school or to be delivered at your

home and you will submit it after a week. For three years,

those were the choices for the students to learn amidst the

pandemic.

But in the year Twenty Twenty-two (2022), hope was seen

by the students as according to statista.com, one hundred

and seventy-nine (179) people out of two hundred (200)

people in the Philippines are already fully vaccinated which

is almost 89 point five percent (89.5%), and with the COVID-

19 cases slowly decreases, the Department of Education

announced that by the second day of November, face-to-face

classes can be carried out with the safety protocols in

place.

For Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School, they’ve been

carrying out face-to-face classes since August but there are

two sets for one section so the social distancing protocol

will still be observed. But after months of thorough

planning and with the go signal of the IATF, the sets per

section were abolished and full face-to-face classes sailed

away.

Some students consider face-to-face learning as the

best way to learn the topics of the subjects. According to

headspace.org, face-to-face is a really effective way to

learn knowledge because it often combines different ways of

learning including writing, reading, discussion,

presentations, projects and group work. And as firm

believers of facts, the researchers of Saint Rose of Lima

Catholic School, Inc. conducted a research about the

“Advantages of Face-to-Face Classes to the students of 11-

HUMSS in SRLCSI.”

For the first part of this research, the researchers

stated the purposes of this research and it’s benefits to

the society. And to further solidify the research, the

researchers conducted an interview to know what are opinions

of students in this topic. In the last part, the researchers

showed the result of the interviews to know the results of

the conducted research.

D. Scope and Limitations

This study focuses on the advantages of having face-to-

face classes in Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School

Incorporated.

This study took place in Saint Rose of Lima Catholics

School Incorporated wherein they conducted the research to

the 11-HUMSS students.

The researcher used purposive sampling to determine the

availability of the participants.

This research was conducted on the month of May, Twenty

twenty-three (2023). The researchers aims to use observation

methods in determining the advantages of face-to-face

classes to the students of 11-HUMSS students.

The data that was collected was from the participants

who participated in our one-on-one interview. The

participants chose to be anonymous for certain privacy

reasons.

E. Conceptual Framework

The primary goal of this research is to know the

advantages of face-to-face classes to the 11-HUMSS students

of SRLCSI. This research is made with the input process-

output model. In the input frame, it stated all the

qualified person to answer the interview that the

researchers have prepared for them. In the process frame,

you can see the steps that the researchers did to achieve

the desired outcome of the study. And in the output frame,

it stated the data that was gathered to know what is the

advantages of face-to-face classes.

Review of Related Literature

This part contains academic and professional readings

involving the advantages of face-to-face classes. The

literature and studies attached to this research also

provides more insight with the motive to increase the

reader’s knowledge, especially those included in the

Importance of the Study. There are also components that can

contribute to this timely issue, particulary in the

advantages of face-to-face classes.

A. Related Literature

According to benchpartner.com, you’ll be able to

concentrate on your learning because there’ll be less

distraction than if you were at home. This is evident in the

modular set-up because students were distracted because they

are being told to do house chores while they are studying.

Another benefit is that you can gain greater

understanding, stories and real-world examples from teachers

and other students. (headspace.org.au)

Because of the possibility to interact immediately and

spontaneously, face-to-face classes interactions are more

likely to be successful because it provides instant feedback

and teachers can immediately view how the students

understand their lessons and make adjustments accordingly.

It also allows better communication, especially if

things become difficult. People are more comfortable

communicating in person because they are one step closer to

each other. (topadvantagesof.com)

Another benefit of face-to-face classes is when

engaging in real-time with the teacher and other students,

you will be improving your language and communication skills

for your future career, but also for your personal life.

B. Related Studies

Last year, the Cornell psychology research finds that

sitting face-to-face enhances learning and innovation. They

conducted an experiment with children and adults to solve a

complex visual and spatial problem which is opening a puzzle

box and the results showed that they solved the puzzle more

quickly after they watched a model demonstrate a solution

face-to-face, rather than the others who observed from next

to or perpendicular to the model. It also stated that test

subjects performed better when they could observe not only

an instructor’s hands but also their eyes, gaze and facial

movements.

According to the College of Arts and

Technology (2022), there are certain
advantages
of learning in a classroom such as
better comfort is being felt while
learning in a classroom
setup. The environment is familiar and
therefore, comforting. It is also said
that students can
understand better from ‘real world’
examples and stories from classmates
and teachers and

Standford researchers also found out that face-to-face

learning is much better compared to online learning because

“in-person communications make our brains happier”. In a

typical class in a campus, teachers are able to strategize

in terms of their lessons because it is least likely that

they need to still compress their lessons to fit in their

modules. A student who can meet and directly communicate

with a real teacher turns out to be more enthusiastic

compared to reading a pile of modules during modular

classes. Because of this, students can develop more and feel

more comfortable interacting with others while learning from

each other in a classroom setup.

Lastly, the students are better able to concentrate

harder on their learning because it provides a greater

chance of completing the lessons successfully by doing it in

a classroom situation because of a guidance of teachers and

even classmates as students can freely communicate with

their teachers and be given immediate feedback. (Du, 2021)
