One Followed by Just Zeros is a Power of 10
These numbers are

Countíng On in Powers of 10
This means adding on 10, or 1000, or 10 000, or another power of 10, each time.
EXAMPLE: From 618 950, count on in steps of 100 000. Stop at 918 950.
To count up in 100 O00s you need to add 100 000 each time. To do this, just add I
to the hundred thousands digit each time. So, find the hundred thousands digit.

In Subtractions, You May Need to Exchange
You set out subtractions the same as additions. Line up the ones or decimal points.
Then you start subtracting with the column of least place value.

What is the number?
EXAMPLE: Which prime numbers multiply together to make 56? All apart

8 isn't a prime (it's a composite number).

Mental Multiplyíng
Break Calculations into Steps
It helps to break calculations into simple steps.

EXAMPLE: What is fifty multiplied by four? Youknowthat 4 X 25 = 100.
12is 3times 4, so: 300.
You know that 50 x 2 = 100. 12 x 25=3 x 100
So 4 lots of 50 will just be double this.
So 4 x 50 = 200.
EXAMPLE: Bananas cost £1.95 per bunch. How much would 16 bunches cost?
You want to work out £1.95 X 16. A near, easier calculation is £2 X 16.
So work out £2 x 16 then subłract 5p X 16.
The difference between
£1.95 and £2 is 5p, so
16 is 2 lots of 8. you had an 'extra 5p'
16 + 16 = £32 5p x 8 = 40p. 16 times when you did
£2 X 16.

Tables don't just help with multiplying They help with dividing too.

This method is good for dividing by a one-digit number.
1) Partition the big number into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.
Divide each of these numbers, starting with the highest place value.

"Per Cent" Means "Out of 100"
% is a short way of writing per cent and it just means "out of 100".
So 20% ("twenty per cent") is 20 out of 100. (0r 20partsinevery100.)
100% is the total amount (here it's the total number ofsquares).
EXAMPLE: 52% of a class own pets. What % of the class don't own pets?
The whole class is 100%. 100 - 52 = 48, so 48% of the class don't own pets.

The Angles Around a Poínt Add Up to 360°
