SUBJECT: Career research of a Hotel Inspector.
Below is a report on the career of a Hotel Inspector as requested. This report aims to analyze
in detail and answer the general outlook of a hotel inspector, with a clear focus on education,
experience requirements, responsibilities, challenges, and a hotel inspector's salary amount.
This report is written under the authorization of the CMNS instructor.
Hotel inspections are one of the most relevant and important careers in this modern world. It
provides a base for credible reviews and improvements in the hotel industry. Hotel inspection
also promotes the creation and maintenance of quality products and services in the hotel
industry. There are many aspects to a hotel inspector other than the obvious inspection.
Inspectors have different responsibilities and challenges they face in their daily activities.
Responsibilities build upon their experiences as time passes and eventually leads to an
increase in pay. These responsibilities entail thorough reviews of products and services and
the ability to accommodate and entertain guests from different backgrounds. Skills and
experiences are built on the knowledge and expertise in the field of inspection. Unique
skillset and a wide range of experience requirements earn one the title of an expert hotel
inspector, which comes with a higher pay grade than the usual entry-level inspectors. Just like
any other career, hotel inspectors face different challenges throughout their work experience.
Mitigating these challenges in the immediate is the most reliable and effective way of
ensuring quality and performance. Among the challenges is inadequate equipment to assist in
the inspection process. These are some of the major issues that are recommended for
addressing. Provision of good quality gear for inspection guarantees quality in results and
recommendations, which protects the hotel industry and its customers by ensuring the quality
of services is prioritized.
Heartfelt thank you and appreciation goes out to the instructor CMNS 1140 for the
assignment and the opportunity to explain and present this report to enlighten others on the
advantages and disadvantages of a hotel inspector. Their importance and relevance to the
hotel industry and society at large. This report, therefore, provides an insight into the career
of Hotel inspection and hopes to answer all questions that pertain to it like any other career.
Details and analysis of this career are highlighted in detail below.

Sincerely,

Student.

Introduction
This report aims to provide a clear scope into a hotel instructor's career, its advantages and
disadvantages, and what it entails to work in that line. It seeks to answer the general outlook,
responsibilities, challenges, skills and experience requirements, and the pay of a hotel
inspector. An inspector is employed with the sole responsibility to ensure that rules and
regulations of a particular place or station are observed. Hotel inspection is a career that is
quickly on the rise though many have done it in the past. Inspection is done everywhere and
in all public businesses to improve the quality of services and ensure an effective increase in
productivity and performance. A hotel inspector does pretty much the same, with the only
difference being that it is a hotel. Hotel inspectors review and analyze and evaluate a variety
of services offered by a hotel. These services may include; meals, refreshments, room
services, and other amenities. They also rate hotels depending on the quality of services
offered, which is very important as it adds credibility to a hotel and promotes customer
response. The core values of a hotel instructor are integrity and professionalism (Rakana
interview 2020). There is a need for hotel inspectors today. The global increase in tourism
and travel requires a boost in the career to ensure the hotel industry's quality.
Hotel inspectors generally have different employers depending either the objectives. The
government can employ them as official government inspectors; they can also be employed
by private companies or self-employed, which means they work for themselves but have
somehow found a way to monetize their services. Examples of these inspectors are
influencers. They have professional qualifications or have met the exact criteria for an
inspection officer. They visit hotels out of their own expense, assess, evaluate, document
their data, and share it on the various social media platforms for public review. The content
they post then receive views, which are translated into money, which earn their salaries.
However, this career is often posted under the housekeeping department for employed hotel
inspectors if a hotel is an employer. A hotel inspector's general career is luxurious and
interesting, with a lot of new things to learn for every inspection one attends.

Findings
Outlook
The general career of a hotel inspector relies majorly on travel and reviews of hotels. Either
on request by management, authorities, public, or goodwill, hotel inspectors set out to
observe, experience, evaluate, and rate the hotel's performance and quality of service. They
then interpret their findings and provide reviews based on the level that meets a higher star
rating criterion. This data is then published and printed on different platforms and official
sites depending on the employer for reference or public knowledge. Reviews promote the
hotel industry by illustrating that quality, hospitality, and performance are the priority. A
step-by-step operation precedes an inspection career framework to capture all aspects and
minimize errors.
The diagram below shows the steps of inspections and what is on their checklists.

The figure above illustrates the steps taken by a hotel inspector on an inspection job to
produce results and reviews.
Education requirements
The hotel inspection career, like any other career, requires an elaborate academic
qualification. These qualifications act as the marker and criteria to determine the career
framework's expertise and technological know-how. A simple college degree in hospitality
management provides the entry point into the career (Whitney, 2016). A college ensures not
to lock out any person willing to pursue this career but has limited resources for education
advancements. Further advancements in the career require a more defined education level.
Higher education for hotel inspector means more responsibilities and expertise needed to
conduct and complete an inspection (Whitney, 2016). Academic qualifications indicate
expertise in the hotel and hospitality industry because of the very nature of diversifying levels
and departments in the industry.

Responsibilities
There is a huge impact on hotel reviews and ratings on service quality and professionalism.
With the continued need to point and visit the best hotel that offers the best services in the
market, the hotel inspector's career is quickly gaining attention and recognition everywhere.
Known scholars have defined inspection as "the process that seeks to ensure all activities are
6

carried out under the authority of the hotel licensing and done consistently following
prescribed procedures" (Azab et al., 2019). Other researchers define it as a visit to hotel
premises either undercover as a guest or as an official inspector to ensure the quality of their
standards measures up to the industry's expectations.
General responsibilities
There are various roles and responsibilities of a hotel inspector. These responsibilities can be
grouped into two groups. General responsibilities and specific responsibilities. General
responsibilities are the most obvious. They include; traveling all around to inspect different
hotels in different locations, provide an honest and competent assessment free of bias, and
recommend a better if not the best way forward to achieve their desired standards.
Specific responsibilities
These responsibilities narrow down to specific tasks only an educated, trained, and
experienced inspectors would do. These responsibilities include; inspection, evaluation,
review, and rating. All standards are inspected in three main areas of the hotel; construction
and facilities, services offered, and maintenance (Azab et al., 2019). Depending on the type
of inspector an individual is, there are procedures to follow during this inspection.
First, the inspection is conducted periodically to ensure that the establishment is given a
chance to work on its weaknesses from the previous inspection. For an inspection to be
effective, sufficient coordination from the concerned departments is needed. The procedures
of this inspection also comply with existing hotel standards. Inspection methods and tools are
needed for this procedure. These methods and tools ensure the inspection is based on a clear
and consistent criterion.
Flexibility in the existing system is important to ensure efficiency (Azab et al., 2019).
Modern methods, technology, and tools are used during this process. When the inspection is
complete, the reviews should be sufficient to improve the quality of the hotel standards and
service and increase customer reception and ratings (Azab et al., 2019). Although hotel
inspection should be done regularly and periodically, lack of financial resources and a limited
number of professional inspectors limit this possibility in most cases (Azab et al., 2019).
After inspection, evaluation follows. Evaluation is analyzing the data collected from
inspection to achieve a logical conclusion for reviews and ratings.
Evaluation is done in steps, keenly reviewing inspection procedures, methods, and tools, the
inspectors themselves, and the final report (Azab et al., 2019). If the facilities, service, and
maintenance standards are met as per the inspections, the evaluation is good and adequate.
Reviews are positive, and the ratings go up, and classification is done either as four or five
stars (Azab et al., 2019). Hotel inspections are random and uninvited. The randomness tactic
is to ensure that the data collected is true and legit because the hotel is not allowed time to
prepare for an inspection.
Experience level.
Any career requires some defined amount of time on the job to increase experience. Hotel
inspectors fall under the category of housekeeping in the hospitality industry, where a good
experience level guarantees work and retention in the industry. Below is a graph on the
retention rate of employees in the hospitality sector, particularly the hotel industry.
Graph 1 shows employee retention capacity in the hotel industry's housekeeping department
depending on the impact they create in the industry.

The graph above shows the retention capability depending on the impact level of employees
in the hospitality industry.

A high experience level boosts performance and increases performance and quality of work
done. For an inspection career, experience is not much of a requirement, only. Experience is
gained on the job by following a very defined step by step approach for an inspection. These
approaches have been vetted and tested for quality assurance before being provided as the
overall inspection job criteria. These levels ensure that once a hotel gets past all the possible
checklist under evaluation, they automatically warrant a good review. Likewise, if a hotel has
a good review but does not meet even one of the inspection checklist criteria, they warrant a
star's loss from its ratings. Losing a star means demotion of status in the industry due to poor
quality of services and products. Demotion creates bad implications for the hotel's
performance in the industry at large. Knowledgeable and educated inspectors are encouraged
to perform their tasks and give review ratings, however bad or good, of their duty and
responsibility.
Salary and payment
Hotel inspectors are generally paid an average hourly wage. These payments vary depending
on education, certification, additional skill, and the inspector's geographical location
(Salary.com, 2020). A typical range of between $55,012 and $75,173 is an inspector's wages
(Salary.com, 2020). With the coast of operations, including travel and accommodations
covered, this displays a good figure for a hotel inspection career. The salary also increases
with the level of experience or time on the job. Another advantage of a hotel inspector is that
salary comes with bonuses and vacations for high performing employees. This scale and
range provide a stable footing for any hotel inspector.
Challenges
Challenges are present in any form of work. These challenges are meant to be worked around
to ensure they do not affect the results and outcome. Hotel inspection as a career has its
challenges too. These challenges vary depending on the hotel's classification. Still, they are
more or less specific to all inspector's classes, from self-employment to those employed by
different organizations or the government.
Specific challenges
Employee performance (Chigozie Nwokorie & Igbojekwe, 2019). Employee performance is a
challenge for inspectors as they have no control over the employees. These challenges cut
across all classes of inspectors, including those on self-employment like influencers. Poor
8

employee performance presents a great impact on the general hotel inspection results.
Employees are key to the maintenance of high standards in the hotel industry.
Another challenge is quality management (Chigozie, Nwokorie & Igbojekwe, 2019).
Elements of quality management include services provided by the hotel without the need for
repetition, and employees suggested ways of performing specific tasks that are crucial to
hotel inspectors (Chigozie Nwokorie & Igbojekwe, 2019). Inspection is one way of achieving
quality control, yet these factors are co-dependent in some ways. When one fails to perform
its duties properly, it poses a challenge to the other.
The other challenge is understaffing in the inspector's department (Goodwin, 2017). Since the
hotel inspection career is a new and uprising way of ensuring quality maintenance in the hotel
industry, it is hugely understaffed, making it harder to perfume effectively (Goodwin, 2017).
The workload for one instructor can prove to be too much; hence inadequate inspection Is
offered. Overwork impacts the management of the hotel industry. These, I believe, are just
but a few challenges faced by hotel instructors. There are many more challenges that need to
be addressed if the inspection department wishes to achieve its inspection standards and
present quality analysis of a particular hotel.

Recommendations
For a hotel inspector, work is about reviewing and analyzing if an institution meets the good
review criteria. Several recommendations ensure this process is smooth and efficient.
1. Choose to create a personal and work score shit to document and reference your work.
2. Strive to gather much knowledge and skill to rise in ranks and become an expert in the
field.
3. Insist on the management to take part in the inspection to avoid bias, favors, and
inequality.
Inspectors should have or create a score shit to document and elaborate on their activities to
increase scores. Documentation should later be transformed into bonuses for increased pay
and other benefits, which will provide enough motivation for the inspector to seek even
higher hotel industry standards. Inspectors should also involve the management in viewing
their checklists to illustrate honesty and strict work ethic and if a hotel has to be stripped of a
star due to lack of quality services. These recommendations will improve the work
environment of hotel inspectors and, ultimately, their performance.

Conclusion
Inspection, as seen, is one of the emerging career opportunities in the hotel industry. With
minimal duties and responsibilities to perform, they achieve one of the best ratings today in
the best hotels we visit. They generally assess different aspects of a hotel using c clear and
defined criteria for assessment. Hotel inspection requires a college degree as the entry-level
to the career but provides room for improvement and promotion. But just like any other
career, they come with challenges that affect their work performance. Mitigating these
challenges can prove very effective in the end evaluation review and ratings of a hotel. The
inspection also ensures quality control and output in the hotel industry. Hotel inspection is
truly a career that provides many opportunities like traveling and exploring new
environments while working at the same time.
The hotel inspection career also allows self-employment in the social media industry. Self-
employed inspectors tend to be very thorough reviews too. They use the same inspection
procedures as those who are employed.
9

In hotel inspection, some inspections are done anonymously before talking to the hotel staff.
This tactic ensures hotels are always clean and provide the same kind of service throughout
the year. The tactic is also intended to catch them off guard and reveal their true nature.
