2. FINDING MY SPIRITUAL GIFTS: WHAT WILL I DO WHEN I SERVE?

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering
God’s grace in its various forms – 1 Peter 4:10

FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF:

1. What thoughts and images come to mind when you think of the term Spiri-
tual Gifts?
2. Discuss what is the best definition for Spiritual gifts
3. Discuss how the following verses relate to spiritual gifts. Look in a fresh
way at each passage, searching especially for (a) God’s commands and
standards to keep, (b) someone’s example to learn from, (c) a promise from
God to believe, (d) a warning to heed, or (e) a challenge to face.
•John 16:13-15
• Rom 12:6-8
• 1 Cor 12; 14
• Gal 5:22
• Eph 4:11
• 2 Tim 1:6-7
• 1 Peter 4:11
4. What vital, fundamental principles can you see in these passages (principles
which are consistent with other Scriptures you know)?

What is a Spiritual Gift?

The word ‘charisma’, with a single exception (1 Peter 4:10), occurs in the New Testament
only in the Pauline Epistles, and is used to explain ‘Special gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit
upon Christians for the purpose of building up the church and the work of ministry.’

What should I know about Spiritual Gifts?

SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Given to all believers to make a unique contribution 1 Cor 12:7
Spiritual gifts are different from natural talents or abilities. We are endowed with natural
gifts or abilities genetically and they need to be developed into talents or skills.
Given to only believers by the Holy Spirit
Romans 12:3,6
Eagerly desire spiritual gifts. God will give as needed
For works of service Eph 4:12
Benefits at spiritual level
From conversion
Given for the common good of edifying and building the church to glorify God 1 Cor 12:1-22
Useless if not used with Love. 1 Cor 13
There seems to be ‘greater gifts’ but Paul writes this to bring across the point that the
greater gifts are those that build up the church.1 Corinthians 14:12
Each member of the Body of Christ does not have the same function, so don’t try and be
someone else, God has made you and given you specific gifts for his service and this will
fit perfectly into the rest of the body.

highest scores, then those are your gifts. If you have four 16’s those are your gifts.
