This study aimed to explore the experiences of carinderia owners amidst an economic
crises. The research was conducted in Bago City, Negros Occidental, specifically in
carinderias near Ramon Torres National High School and Bago City College, during the
academic year 2022-2023. The study utilized a qualitative descriptive analysis approach
and employed purposive sampling to select six (6) participants who had been operating
their carinderias for at least four (4) years and had a daily customer capacity of fifty (50)
or more. Data was collected through a self-made interview questionnaire that was
validated by three research experts, with a total validity index of 96%. Thematic analysis
was used to analyze the data, resulting in the identification of five main themes: the
emotional journey, building trust with suppliers, government support for small
businesses, fostering customer loyalty in uncertain times, and coping strategies employed
by carinderia owners to achieve business success. The findings revealed that carinderia
owners faced numerous challenges, including rising prices due to the COVID-19
pandemic. Despite these challenges, they also identified potential interventions such as
implementing sustainable prices without compromising the quality of their food to keep
their business afloat during these unprecedented times. The emotional journey of the
carinderia owners was also identified as a significant factor, as they experienced anxiety,
stress, and uncertainty during the economic crises. Furthermore, building trust with
suppliers was found to be crucial in securing high-quality ingredients at a reasonable
price. Participants also expressed a need for government support for small businesses,
including financial assistance and fairness of aid distribution, to help them survive during
an economic crises. In conclusion, the study highlights the challenges and coping
strategies of carinderia owners during an economic crises. The findings may provide
insights for policymakers and small business owners to help them navigate similar
situations.
