farmers and the public alike, and
the show is often used for intro-
ducing new models and brands.
Included in the mix is KZN’s
largest annual display of birds,
rabbits and honey products, each
of which includes a purchase and
educational component; this to
complement the natural wool and
fibre expo and display of indige-
nous livestock.
Aside from agriculture, the
Royal Show continues to cater for
a broad mix of 450 or so commer-
cial, industrial and service sector

The Royal Show Craft Hall
will be packed full of stun-
ning hand-made items
from May 27 to June 5.
This year’s exhibitors
include members of the
KZN Quilters Guild, whose
creations will be judged
in three categories: bed
quilt, lap or wall quilt, and
cot quilt. Rosettes will be
awarded by the Midlands
Quilters Guild for the top
three in each section.
There will be

ALL ABOUT SHEEP AND WOOL SWEET OFFERS

The interactive Sheep & Wool Expo is a firm
favourite with all age groups, and was a worthy
winner of the RAS President’s Trophy for special
endeavour last year.
The expo covers all aspects of sheep (and goats)
and wool, from conception to consumption.
The animals, as well as the products derived
from them, are displayed side by side.
Visitors can watch sheep-shearing demon-
strations hosted by the National Wool
Growers Association (NWGA) from
FRIDAY, MAY 26 TO SUNDAY,
MAY 28, and from FRIDAY, JUNE 2 TO
SUNDAY, JUNE 3, every hour on the
hour, from 10 am to 5 pm.
There are daily workshops on
spinning, dyeing, knitting, felting or
leather work, and visitors who are
inspired to learn these skills can
chat to expert crafters and exhib-
itors to learn what to do. A social
knitting and crocheting table is
available for anyone who wants to
relax with creative projects.
Visitors interested in farming
sheep and goats can chat to repre-
sentatives from the Agricultural
Research Council and the Goat Ag-
ribusiness Project about starting
their own enterprise.
There is also a range of beau-
tiful products on sale, including
sheepskin slippers, knitting
yarns, leather belts and
pouches, scarves, hand-knit-
ted jerseys, pullovers, hats,
mohair blankets, shawls,
socks and more.
And, if you need refresh-
ment, there is a coffee
shop and farm stall.
The Sheep & Wool
Expo can be found in
the far corner of the
show grounds, near
Gate 8 and
the Snake
Park.
Are you fascinated by bees?
Do you want to make your garden more
bee friendly?
Or learn how to keep bees in an apiary?
Then the Honey Hall at the Royal Show is
just the place for you.
It has been run for many years by
dedicated members of the KZN Bee
Farmers Association, a voluntary group,
which aims to promote beekeeping and
associated industries and products.
The members aim to educate the public
about bees and honey, and other bee
products, such as beeswax, propolis and
mead.
The KZN Bee
Farmers Association
also holds one of
the premier honey
competitions in the
country and visitors
will be able to view
the entries and
understand the
wonderful diversity
of real honey.
The Honey Hall also
offers honey tasting, an
opportunity to watch live
bees hard at work, and many
experienced beekeepers who
will be there to answer all your
questions.

ITALIAN CATTLE TO MAKE THEIR FIRST ROYAL APPEARANCE
This year’s Royal Show will host
two national championships,
one in the cattle section and
the other in the sheep section.
Making their first ap-
pearance at the Royal show
grounds is the Chianina, a beef
breed from Italy. Visitors will
be able to see these cattle
in the parade ring during the
Chianina Cattle Breed National
Championship, which will take
place from 9 am on May 30.
On the same day, in the
sheep section, the Hampshire
Down breeders will be com-
peting for Best on Show during

The Hampshires will be
among 750 small stock (sheep
and goats) competing in breed
competitions. Also heading

WITNESS THE BEST OF THE BREEDS

Since its beginnings as
“The Pietermaritzburg
Fair” in 1851 behind the city
hall, the Royal Agricultural
Show has been the place
for farmers to show their
livestock for the past 172
years.
The show’s cattle and
small-stock sections
have been renowned for
generations.
A wide range of breeds
are represented every
year, and the highlight
of this section of the
show is the Standard
Bank Gold Cup Awards,
the culmination of fierce
competition between
livestock breeders at
the show grounds in
Pietermaritzburg.
The final judging is held
in the main arena in view
of the public.
This year, the Royal
Show’s Standard Bank
Gold Cup will take place
from 4 pm on May 31.
The cattle will again be
joined by the small-stock
champions from the sheep
and goat competitions,
which will be paraded
for all to see and witness
the high standards our
farmers are attaining.
On the morning of May 29, the Royal
Agricultural Society will be holding the
AAM Veld heifer competition, which is
open to all heifer types: composites,
pure and cross breeds.
Femininity, form and function are
the judging goals.
The classes are: three in calf heifer;
three open replacement heifers; and
three weaner heifers (born 2023).
The champions of the three classes
will compete to be crowned as the
RAS and AAM best heifers in KwaZulu-
Natal. The owners will receive a cash
prize.
The competition provides a great
opportunity to display and promote
heifers, especially those whose
breeds don’t get air time at
shows.
Please note: no maize fed animals
are allowed. The RAS is trying to
promote cattle directly from the
camp and which will go directly back
on the camp for breeding.
The heifers should arrive on the
Sunday night or before 9 am on the
Monday morning. The competition,
which will be judged by Barry Symons
and Rowan van Aart, will start at
10 am.

Orchestra comprises 65 young musicians from
around KwaZulu-Natal between the ages of 10 and 18.
They meet once a week in Durban to rehearse a varied
repertoire. Their performance will include Dvorak’s
Slavonic Dance No. 8, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, popular
hit Pirates of the Caribbean, and Zebra Crossing form
the Soweto String Quartet.

at this year’s Royal Rock Concert in the main arena at
the Royal show grounds from 1.30 pm on May 27. Also
on the bill is singer and songwriter Jesse Clegg

as Shadowclub, one of SA’s premier rock
bands; blues rocker Joss Harding and his
band; and Midlands duo Cantrel, featuring
Neil Breytenbach and his son Jesse.

 The skies of Pietermaritzburg are set for an

exhilarating experience when the FMX showpiece,
Flight Night, is staged in the main arena at the Royal
show grounds on June 3.
Featuring heart-stopping aerial stunts, pyro
technicians, music and an appearance from the
Monster Girls, fans can expect the experience of a
lifetime.
The Flight Night features a line-up of riders,
including Dallan Goldman, who promises to elevate
the show with his undeniable talent and energy.
Joining him are Jacques Human, the dynamic Jason
Hannan and the captivating Mike Oyston.
Flight Night has become synonymous with
excitement and spectacle, showcasing some of the
country’s best performers and talent.
“Every year, our aim is to create an unforgettable
experience for our fans by bringing together a unique
mix of motorsport art and technology,” said organiser,

to the Sheep & Wool Expo at the
Royal Show this year.
Surrounded by a range of
mohair products in the Expo, the
beautiful Angoras with their soft
ringlets of hair show the very
beginning of an incredible value
chain in which the South African
mohair industry has become a
world leader.
The presence and knowledge
of the Grootfontein students
has been massively valuable to
visitors over the past few years
— for those who are general-
ly interested in how mohair
products are produced, and
for those who are specifically
interested in farming Angora
goats and becoming mohair
producers themselves.
It all starts with the beautiful
Angora goats, whose coat of
long, soft ringlets of fine and
lustrous mohair is shorn twice
a year to become luxury mohair
fleece.
Mohair fibre is known for its
high lustre and sheen, for its abil-
ity to take dye exceptionally well,
and for its excellent insulating
properties (providing warmth
in winter and remaining cool in
summer).
Mohair is also durable, elastic,
flame-resistant, and crease-re-
sistant, and is a renewable
resource. Its rare and natural
qualities are therefore highly
valued in fashion, interior design,
and crafts, as well as for use in
industrial fibres.
The quality of mohair depends
on the age of the Angora goat.
Younger animals provide finer
and softer hair for scarves and
shawls, and older animals pro-
vide stronger hair for carpets and
heavy fabrics.
South Africa’s mohair industry
has a proud history spanning
nearly two centuries, and we are
now the world’s largest produc-
er of mohair.

the Eastern Cape Karoo, an ideal
environment for Angora goats,
where they thrive in the hot, dry
summers and colder winters of
the semi-desert landscape.

tional knowledge at the Groot-
fontein Agricultural Development
Institute (GADI), is also what
makes the Grootfontein Student
Angora Stud, located near Mid-
delburg, the ideal training ground
for those wishing to enter the
mohair industry by learning how
to farm Angoras.

Sheep & Wool Expo throughout
the Royal Show, and visitors who
want to find out more about

GROWING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FARMERS

For four decades, the KZN Youth
Show has been cultivating the
next generation of farmers, giv-
ing them a platform to showcase
their skills and rewarding their
tireless efforts throughout the
year.
This event has become an
integral part of the Royal Show,
and 2023 marks its momentous
40th anniversary.
From May 26 to May 28, the
KZN Youth Show will host eight
competitive classes, including
beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep,
goats, rabbits, chickens, pigeons
and auctioneering.
Participants will
be tested on their
animal prepa-
ration, show-
manship and
knowledge,
with adult
assistance
during the
compe-
titions
strictly
forbidden.
The classes are
divided into Junior Junior (under
10 years), Junior (under 14 years),
and Senior (under 18 years),
ensuring that each participant
competes with their peers.
This competition provides a
unique opportunity for aspiring
farmers to hone their skills and
gain valuable recognition.
