1. (A) Let R be a commutative ring with unity. An ideal M of R is maximal ideal of R
R
iff is a field.
M
(B) Let R1 and R2 be two rings. Show that R1 × R2 is an integral domain if and only
if any one of them is an integral domain and the other contains only a zero
element. [14+06=20]

2. Show that the group G of four transformations f1, f2, f3, f4 defined by f1(z) = z.
1 1
f2(z) = –z, f 3 (z) = ,f 4 (z) = − with composite composition is isomorphic to the
z z
permutation group G′ of degree 4 consisting of the permutation I, (a b), (c d),
(a b) (c d). [13]
a b
3. Let G be the set of all real 2 × 2 matrices where ad ≠ 0, under matrix
0 d
1 b
multiplication. Let N . Prove that
0 1
(a) N is a normal subgroup of G.
(b) G/N is abelian. [15]
5. Let RC = Ring of all real valued continuous functions on [0, 1], under the operations
(f + g) x = f(x) + g(x) (fg) x = f(x) g(x).
1
Let M = f ∈ f 2 = 0 .
c
9. Show that the multiplicative group G = {1, – 1, i, – i), where i = (−1) , is isomorphic
to the group G′ = ({0, 1, 2, 3}, +4). [10]
10. Prove that every homomorphic image of a group G is isomorphic to some quotient
group of G. [15]
11. Let R be a field of real numbers and S, the field of all those polynomials f(x) ∈
R[x] such that f(0) = 0 = f(1). Prove that S is an ideal of R[x]. Is the residue class
ring R[x]/S an integral domain ? Give justification for your answer. [15]
14. (i) If G is a finite group and H is a subgroup of G then o(H) divides o(G). Is converse
true ? Justify your answer.
(ii) If in a group G, a5 = e, aba–1 = b2 for a, b, ∈ G then show that o(b) = 31. [16]
15. (i) Let β ∈ S7 and suppose that β = (2, 1, 4, 3)(5, 6, 7). Find the least positive
integer n such that βn = β–3.
(ii) Let Φ be a group homomorphism from Z24 onto Z8. Find Ker(Φ).
a b
(iii) Let G be the set of all 2 × 2 matrices where a, b, c d, are integers modulo
c d
2, such that ad – bc ≠ 0. Using matrix multiplications as the operation in G
prove that G is a group of order 6. [16]
16.
Let F be the field of integers modulo 5. Show that the polynomial x2 + 2x + 3
is irreducible over F. Use this is construct a field containing 25 elements.
[10]
17. (i) Let G be an Abelian group and H = {x ∈ G | xn = e for some odd integer n (n
may vary with x)}. Prove that H is a subgroup of G. Is H a subgroup if “odd”
is replaced by “even”?
(ii) Given that β and g are in S4 with βγ = (1432), γβ = (1 2 4 3) and β(1) = 4,
determine β and γ. [12+8=20]
