Part B: Core element

Topic 6: weather routeing (Wks. 15 and 16: 4 hrs)

Introduction to the topic
In marine navigation, once current and weather is factored, a straight line does not become the
shortest distance.
As discussed in the topic on tidal stream, current great affects ship speed resulting in incorrect
estimation of arrival time if not factored-in in the planning.
In this topic we shall discuss the factors affecting ship speed at sea. As before the weather
routeing chart we will be using is the British Admiralty published chart.
Routeing comes from the word route, which means path. Routeing therefore means finding the
path. Routing, without “e,” on the other hand means gathering information.

Discussion:
1. Weather routeing chart1
Weather routeing chart is an essential element in passage planning for ocean voyages.
Routeing Charts include routes and distances between major ports, ocean currents, ice limits,
load lines and wind roses. They also contain expected meteorological and oceanographic
conditions for each month of the year.
Below are two images of routeing charts

This is an enlarged section of the chart. You will notice that the recommended route are not
straight line

Here are the info on the routeing chart you need to plan the sea passage.
