Title
Evaluating the impact of performance management on employee motivation in India’s
telecommunications industry

Aim of the research

This research study aims to analyze how performance management influences the motivation
level of employees in the telecommunications industry of India.

Objectives of the research

The motivation level of employees plays a considerable part towards the success or failure of any
business and on the other hand, performance management is important for both employer and
employees. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the impact of performance management
towards the employees’ motivation level, particularly in the telecommunication industry of India.
There are different following objectives to analyze in this paper:
 To understand the importance of performance management for employees.
 To explore the overall impact of performance management on employees’ motivation
level in the telecommunication industry in India.
 To analyze the importance of boosting up motivation level of employees in the
telecommunication industry of India.
These objectives will help the researcher to work on the research paper according to the defined
objectives and effectively answer the research aim.

Rationale for study

The performance and motivation level of employees are among the important factors that lead
some business sectors towards success. Many managers are focused towards finding out
innovative methods to align employees’ motivation level to the organisation's performance and
thus, managers in some business sectors adjust their organizational performance management
system to encourage employees and analyze their performance towards assigned tasks efficiently
(G and Saraswathi, 2018).
It is supported by Kaur and Singla in the article (Almulaik, 2023) that assessing and analyzing
individual and organizational performance with an aim to increase the efficiency of the
organization is known as "performance management." Managers work together with staff
workers to set performance objectives, evaluate performance outcome, as well as reward
performance. In short, the main purpose of employee motivation is to increase productivity
levels and enhance their link to the organization. Considering the importance of performance
management, the significance of increasing the motivation level of employees in the
telecommunications sector of India is worth exploring. India’s telecommunications industry is
the second largest in the world, with a remarkable subscriber base of 1.17 billion as of August
2022 (Dighe, 2023). Therefore, the employees’ motivation level to better perform in the
telecommunications sector of India cannot be ignored. The manager has to adopt a performance
management system to better analyze the performance outcomes of the employees and help
improve their motivation levels (Almulaik, 2023).

The telecommunications system has become the electronic communication network that is used
for the transfer of various kinds of information, for example, video, audio, graphics etc. Not only
in India but worldwide it is a fast-growing communication medium. At present, the
telecommunication sector is going through remarkable global change with the privatization and
liberalization of the sector, which also leads to competition (Kalyan and Pedirappagari, 2019).
Therefore, the telecommunication sector of India requires increased employee motivation levels
with the help of performance management to better deal with the phenomenal global change and
competes with the emerging trends. Performance management fully relies upon the commitment
of the management, employee capabilities, and performance clarity. If performance management
is properly planned and managed then it becomes an important tool for increasing employee
development and motivation to effectively deal with the telecommunication sector’s
competencies (Gautam and Jain, 2016).

Moreover, Gutam and Jain (Gautam and Jain, 2016) it cannot be denied that performance
management is equally important for organizations and employees since it helps employers and
companies to understand their employment strategies and the way employees take part towards
the success of the organizational goals. The motivation of employees to achieve the overall goals
of the organization can be evaluated with the practice of performance management (Gautam and
Jain, 2016).

Research approach or methodology proposed

To fulfil the research objectives, the research strategy of Qualitative data will be used because it
particularly emphasizes on collecting and analyzing non-numerical data to answer the research
objectives (Aspers and Corte, 2019). And, this research aims to understand and analyze the
impact of performance management on employees’ motivation levels and answer the importance
of increasing employees’ motivation in the telecommunication industry. These research
objectives can be answered easily with the qualitative research approach. Interviews will be
conducted with the managers and employees to ask them about their performance management
strategies and employees’ motivation level. Radom and a convenient sampling method will be
adopted to interview the managers and employees from different telecommunication companies.

Also, the literature will be reviewed to understand the importance of performance management
as a whole and to analyze its impact on employees in a detailed manner. In short, the qualitative
research method will be selected in order to mainly focus on understanding procedures,
experiences, and the behaviour of employees influenced by performance management.
Qualitative research focuses on providing answers in the form of words rather than numbers and
the objectives of this research study is to understand the impact and importance of performance
management on employees’ motivation level, thus, the data collected in words would be better
than the numbers to elaborate the purpose of the research. Since qualitative research is also
considered as the study of the nature of phenomena. Research objectives can be solved
thoroughly with the help of the Qualitative research method because it covers beyond just “what”
(Busetto, Wick and Gumbinger, 2020).
