20. Animals are classified in many different ways. Describe how we classify animals by use. Give
examples for each classification division. In your examples you should name some breeds where it is
applicable, and why these breeds are in that classification division. When giving examples, think
about your own animals you have owned. Describe what your animals were used for and how they
would be classified. Explain why we use classification systems today.
Meat Animals – Raised primarily for harvest and human consumption. Examples: Suffolk and
Hampshire sheep, Angus and Hereford beef cattle, and Boer Goats.

Dairy Animals – Raised for their milk production. Examples: Milking shorthorn, Holstein, Apline
goat, Nubian goat.

Work Animals – Used for transportation, tillage, working livestock. Examples: Horses and dogs.

Dual-purpose – Can do multiple things like being used as a meat animal and a dairy animal.
Examples: Shorthorn cattle (milking and beef), Sheep (shear wool and harvest meat).

Why – Would have confusion surrounding the names and identification of the animals. This is an
organized method of helping to identify types of animals.
