CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The project for BMCG 2513 is a mini project that represents 30 percent of the total
course work marks with 5 percent representing the proposal and 25 percent for the final
report. The objective of this project is to understand and become proficient in using
Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks. SolidWorks is a popular
software used in the field of product design and engineering. It provides a variety of tools
and functions for engineers to create perfect 3D, 3D models. In addition, SolidWorks
provides facilities to create motion and product simulation. This can allow users to test and
understand how the product operates in various conditions. This is also known as
SolidWorks CAM and SolidWorks Simulation. Next, it also facilitates team sharing and
collaboration in producing a product. SolidWorks is the choice of many because of its
ability to produce realistic 3D models. In addition, you can change the material used and
allow users to get the weight of the product at once.

The product that needs to be produced is a piece of furniture that can save space in the
home. This product must provide benefits to users who must maintain a modern and more
innovative style. For example, wall beds, extension tables, foldaway desks, and clever
storage cabinets or drawers. Our team build one product that can be a bed and also a study
table. Its suitable to put in adult and child room.

10
1.1 Objective
1. To design and develop products effectively through the applications of SolidWorks.
2. To enhance student skill in using SolidWorks Software.
3. To develop teamwork among group members

1.2 Problem statement

Furniture is an important piece of equipment in a home. The existence of this furniture is
due to several reasons, one of which is to provide comfort and convenience to people in their
daily activities. For example, a bed to provide comfortable sleep and a desk to do work The
second is that furniture can help in arranging and organising the space. The third is furniture
that gives aesthetic style and function to the space. The choice of colour, design, and furniture
materials gives uniqueness and beauty to the home. Because not all houses have a large space,
the existence of "space-saving furniture". Space-saving furniture is furniture specially designed
to optimise the use of a narrow and limited space. This means that the furniture has some ability
to save smaller and narrow spaces. For example, bunk beds would fit two bed spaces into one
space. In addition, a folding table that can be opened for use and folded after completion The
question is, can the buyer want a table and a bed at the same time to save space in his home?
Therefore, we built Benifical Furniture, where this furniture can change from a bed to a table.
With this, users can save space in their homes.

METHODOLOGY

2.1 Introduction
Since this project's topic is space-saving furniture, it stands to reason that items that are
created and painted might make a room seem smaller. The object must also be made to fit in a
tiny area and have a distinct, appealing form. In order to complete this assignment successfully,
I will discuss the history of our product in light of the provided subject. We produce
sophisticated bedside tables. We produce furniture that can be utilised as a bed or a desk. It call
as Benifical Furniture.

2.1.1 Product Background and Overall Function

We can see how it initially seemed to be wall furniture in the figure below. When the
furniture is unfolded, everything from the wall decor to the bed is visible. Additionally, the
front of the furniture may be slid out to become a table. This implies that customers may
combine sleeping and studying on one piece of furniture. This item demonstrates how
furniture, particularly in compact spaces, may maximise available space in a room. Figure 1
shows how the product resembles a piece of furniture that is mounted on the wall. The little
portion at the top of the kite, which can be seen from the front, is a board that users may use
to learn. Users may utilise the huge container as a surface for studying. Figure 2 shows how
the furniture transforms into a bed when it is opened. We utilise the C bracket that is built
into the furniture at the foot of the bed as the bed holder. Figure 3 shows how the table in the
front portion opens to create a table, and the bracket A at the bottom of the table supports the
weight of the goods on the table. The bracket has been debated and chosen appropriately. In
general, the way to use Benifical Furniture is to press the hidden latch under the table to fold
and lock. then to open the bed it is necessary to pull the handle bar of the bed so that the foot
of the bed can go down properly.

CHAPTER 3

DISCUSSION AND PRODUCT TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

3.1 Discussion on how Benifical Bed and each related part’s mechanisms function.
A bed and table that folds into one unit is a versatile piece of furniture that serves dual
purposes. It integrates the functions of a bed and a table into a single unit, allowing for effective
space utilisation and providing convenience in a variety of contexts. It effortlessly transforms
from a comfortable bed for dozing into a functional table for various activities, thanks to its
simple folding mechanism. The brackets are an integral component that contributes to its
stability and functionality. The brackets of a foldable bed are essential components with
specific functions that ensure the bed's or table's correct folding, locking, support, and overall
structural integrity.Important components that allow the bed and table to fold and unfurl
effortlessly are hinge brackets. These brackets are positioned at the joints so that transitioning
between the two configurations is straight forward.

Figure 37 Benificial Bed Product

34
Locking brackets are responsible for securing the respective positions of the foldable bed
and table. These brackets, which are equipped with securing mechanisms such as pins or
latches, ensure that the bed remains stable while in use and that the table stays in position
during various activities.

Figure 38 Bracket A

Figure 39 Bracket B

35
Leg brackets are necessary for sustaining the bed and table supports. These brackets ensure
that the legs are securely affixed to the frame, assuring the stability and steadiness of the
furniture when in use. They may have foldable or detachable mechanisms for storage
convenience.

Figure 40 Foot Table

Construction and material of these brackets are crucial factors to consider. Strong materials,
such as steel, aluminium, and premium polymers, are most frequently used to manufacture
them. The choice of material is influenced by factors such as price, weight, and durability.
The attachments must be able to withstand the pressures and loads imposed by both the bed
and table functions.
Regarding the Benifical Furniture and their attachments, safety is of the utmost importance.
The brackets should be designed and manufactured to comply with safety standards,
thereby reducing the possibility of accidents or injuries during use. To ensure proper setup
and secure fastening of the brackets, precise assembly instructions and guidelines should
be provided. In conclusion, the stability, functionality, and security of the Benifical
Furniture are provided by numerous brackets. The hinge brackets allow for effortless
folding and unfolding, the securing brackets keep the furniture securely in position, the
support brackets uniformly distribute weight, and the leg brackets provide stability.
Material, construction, and safety features of these attachments are crucial for a dependable
and secure experience with a Benifical Furniture.

36
3.2 Discussion on techniques or new techniques and difficulties.
In SolidWorks drawings, it is essential to evaluate how the CAM (Computer-Aided
Manufacturing) element should be designed as well as any potential problems that could arise.
Let's discuss the CAM component and any potential problems that may arise when SolidWorks
is used to CAM the product. The CAM component displays the machine or tool used to
manufacture the product's component elements. To design the CAM component, the
appropriate tools must be selected, the machining processes must be determined, and toolpaths
must be generated. However, the CAM procedure may encounter a number of obstacles. The
optimal machining operations must be selected, which is a separate matter. SolidWorks offers
numerous operations, including milling, drilling, turning, and routing. Selecting the proper
operations, toolpaths, cutting parameters, and input rates can be difficult because they have a
direct impact on the productivity and quality of the manufacturing process.

Figure 41 SolidWorks CAM

37
In SolidWorks drawings, Assembly constraints and companions play an essential role in
delineating the relationships between elements within an assembly. Nevertheless, working with
assembly constraints and partners can present some challenges. They detail the relationships
between components and how they should be joined, positioned, and given space to move.
Although these capabilities provide latitude and control over the construction, they can be
challenging to implement. It can be difficult to choose the correct faces, edges, or locations to
establish assembly constraints and members, particularly for complex assemblies with
numerous components. Errors and misalignments can be caused by selecting the incorrect
references or improperly joining sections. Complexity exists in the management of degrees of
freedom within an assembly. It can be challenging to ensure that the assembly has the
appropriate amount of mobility while also maintaining desirable constraints. To ensure that the
product functions as intended, the product's rigidity and flexibility must be properly balanced.
Creating SolidWorks drawings can be challenging due to complex geometries, dimensioning,
assembly constraints, large assemblies, interference detection, and CAM (Computer-Aided
Manufacturing) component parts. Overcoming these obstacles requires expertise, attention to
detail, and effective communication to ensure that manufacturing drawings are accurate and
comprehensive.

Figure 42 Assembly view Exploded view

38
3.3 Suggestions to improve Benfical Furniture in future.
Firstly, enhancing the structural integrity and steadfastness of the Benifical Furniture is
meant by "enhanced stability." When discussing increased stability, the emphasis is on
minimising wavering, swaying, and the possibility of toppling over during use. Second,
integrate additional support characteristics to enhance stability. This could involve
strategically positioned support rods, cross bracing, or reinforced thighs. These components
aid in uniformly distributing weight and pressure, thereby reducing the likelihood of sagging
or instability. Third, include anti-slip characteristics in the design to prevent the bed or table
from sliding or transferring on various surfaces. This may involve rubberized or textured soles
for enhanced traction and stability. Fourth, adjustable features should be incorporated into the
design to accommodate various user preferences and body types. For instance, the bed could
feature an adjustable headrest or recline settings to enable users to discover their ideal slumber
position. Likewise, the table could have height-adjustable configurations to accommodate
users of different heights and seating arrangements. Several important areas of the Benifical
Furniture can be enhanced to enhance its functionality, user experience, and overall appeal.
By emphasising these aspects, the product can more effectively meet the needs and
preferences of consumers. The Benifical Furniture can be transformed into a more versatile,
comfortable, and user-friendly product that meets the evolving requirements and expectations
of its users by incorporating these enhancement ideas and development process.

TECHINCAL DRWINGS

4.1 Introduction
Technical drawing is used to describe components in detail, including size, shape,
proportion and relationship between components. This technical drawing should provide
enough information to reproduce or produce the object. Technical drawing uses prescribed
symbols and notations such as measurement symbols, material symbols and other symbols that
help in the interpretation and reading of pictures. Technical drawing plays an important role in
various industries, including machine engineering, manufacturing, product design and others.

4.3.1 G Code of SolidWork CAM
G-code is the coding that instructs your machine how to operate. The tool paths that you
design are translated into a language that the machine can understand by CAM software with
the aid of a post-processor. a continuous sequence of instructions and coordinates that
controls the movement of your CNC machine as well as other aspects of the operation, such
as tool changes, coolant levels, and spindle speeds. While G-code is certainly the second half
to that bridge from CAD/CAM to machine, some machinists prefer to manually type up their
own G-code. They simply look at a print and manually generate the coordinates for the
machine to follow, as opposed to using a CAD/CAM procedure. Below are a few of the G
codes generated by Solid Work Cam for the machining operation used to fabricate the group's
logo.

4.4 SolidWorks Simulation
An effective tool for conducting stress analysis on 3D CAD models is SolidWorks
Simulation. It enables engineers and designers to evaluate the structural integrity of their
designs by simulating how their designs would behave under various loading scenarios. The
SolidWorks stress analysis tool is simulated by applying pressures or forces from outside, and
the resulting distribution of stresses within the structure is then calculated. Shear stresses as
well as regular stresses (compressive or tensile) may be present. The study aids in locating
concentrations of high stress, possible failure sites, and deformation patterns. The model is
discretized into small components using SolidWorks Simulation's finite element method
(FEM), which enables precise computations of the stress distribution. The model is divided into
a mesh of connected elements using the FEM, and each element is given a material.
