What is Occupational Health and Safety?

It is systematic and scientific studies conducted in order to protect from the

conditions that may cause health damage caused by various reasons during
the execution of work in the workplace.

Reactive approach

is based on responding to events after they have happened.

Reactive approach

• What are the characteristics of a reactive person?

• They wait until problems pop up to address the underlying issue… or
might only ever address the symptom.
• When problems do occur, they’re usually quick to address things.
• They tend to manage the pressure of “putting out fires” fairly well.
• They work well under pressure and exercise good judgment on the fly.

Proactive approach

focuses on eliminating problems before they have a chance to appear

3rd Week : Reactive and Proactive Approach
Proactive approach
• What are the characteristics of a proactive person?
• They ask questions, suggest ideas, and make comments on things
beyond the scope of their day-to-day tasks.
• They anticipate potential problems and work to solve underlying issues
before trouble starts.
• “Wait and see” is not in their vocabulary.
• They tend to be good at working with (or sometimes manipulating) other
people to get the outcome they want.

How to shift from reactive to proactive OHS?

Safety in 3 steps

The first step would be to make safety productive rather than protective.

How to shift from reactive to proactive OHS?

Safety in 3 steps

“Safety is more than the absence of accidents, and cannot be achieved only
by eliminating hazards and by preventing things from going wrong,” said
International safety expert Prof. Erik Hollnagel.

“Safety management must also learn how things go right and find ways to
make sure that it happens.”

How to shift from reactive to proactive OHS?

Safety in 3 steps

A second step would be to realise that it is more important to learn from what
happens all the time, even though the consequences may seem small, than
to learn from what happens rarely, even though the consequences may be
large.

A third step would be to understand the importance of variability

(approximate adjustments) for everyday performance. Hollnagel said
variability is generally useful and should be controlled rather than eliminated.
