1 What is consultation and why should employers and workers consult on health and safety issues?
Consultation is a two-way process in which you and your employees: - discuss about health and
safety issues - listen to their problems and express your own concerns - seek and exchange
perspectives and information, and - evaluate what your employees say before making judgements.

A safe workplace is more easily achieved when everyone involved in the work communicates with
each other to identify hazards and risks, talks about health and safety concerns and works together
to find solutions. This includes cooperation between duty holders, the people who manage or
control the work and those who carry out the work or who are affected by the work.

By drawing on the knowledge and experience of their workers, PCBUs can make more informed
decisions about how the work should be carried out safely.

Effective health and safety consultation also has other benefits:

− greater awareness and commitment—because workers who have been actively involved in how
health and safety decisions are made will better understand the decisions

-positive working relationships—because understanding the views of others leads to greater

cooperation and trust.

2 List five opportunities workers might have to participate in health and safety consultation
processes.

The five opportunities workers might have to participate in health and safety consultation processes
are:

7
- Team meetings

2 How might workers raise health and safety issues in the workplace?

WHS issues can be raised verbally by workers speaking to the workplace supervisor or nominated
Health and Safety Representative. Simple ways to raise a WHS issue may be by Speaking or reporting
it to the Supervisor or Manager. Organisations will have procedures in place for raising health and
safety issues with designated personnel.

For example, some organisations might require issues to be raised in writing by using email or a
variety of health and safety reporting forms. Other organisations might require all health and safety
issues to be reported directly to HSRs, rather than to team leaders or supervisors.

3 A worker has raised a health and safety issue with their supervisor but it does not seem that any
action has been taken to resolve the issue. What should the worker do?

If a supervisor takes no action on health and safety issue raised by the worker, the worker should
definitely raise it at a team meeting or ask their HSR to raise the issue on their behalf at the team.

Assessment 2- Project

On Monday at about 9.30am a worker tripped over a power cord that was lying across a walkway in
the bar storage area. The worker fell to the ground with their hands out in front of them. There was
no blood at the scene but the worker’s left hand and wrist were very tender and looked quite
swollen. Two other workers saw the accident happen and helped the worker into a sitting position
on the floor. They called for the first aid officer who applied ice to the injured worker’s left wrist. The
first aid officer was concerned that the worker might have broken their left wrist so they arranged
for them to be taken to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. The HSR visited the site
of the accident and had the power cord taped to the floor to avoid any further accidents.
