HOW CAN WE MAKE THE LABORATORY A SAFER PLACE.

WHAT IS SAFETY
• the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or
injury.
• It may involve a proactive or reactive process based on the conditions
surrounding the workplace, or environment itself.
Accident Prevention
• Requires the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment, and the
promotion of safe behaviour.

• Originally a reactive process - waiting for accidents or ill health to happen and
then devising and implementing a prevention control.

investigators about accident causation.

Unsafe Acts Unsafe Conditions

Operating equipment at improper speeds Inadequate guards

Operating equipment with authority
Defective tools or equipment
Using equipment improperly
Congestion of working area
Using defective equipment
Poor housekeeping
Failure to wear PPE

Taking and improper working position Excessive noise

Servicing equipment in motion Poor illumination

Defeating safety devices Poor ventilation

Why Is Safety Important?
Safety is important for moral reasons: Morally speaking, no one want to get hurt, and no one is happy that someone else gets hurt.

1. Safety help prevent injury/dead to individuals

2. Helps prevent damage to property and equipment

3. Ensure a happy and healthy workforce

Safety is important for economic reasons: When you are involved in accident, you spend money. Thus may be detrimental to your
business.

4. Reduces lost time and increase financial benefit and safe money from payment of compensations, hospital bills, death right, etc.

5. Improve productivity, Reduce absenteeism and enhances company image & reputation

Safety is important for legal reasons: Since safety is a law, non-compliance will attract punishment in terms of fines, imprisonment
or your business may be shut-down by regulatory bodies.

6. Protect firm/organization from legal actions

Signs that Indicate Danger
• Caution Signs: minor or moderate injuries may occur
 These signs warn of potential physical injuries caused by slips or falls, harmful substances, or other unsafe practices.
All caution signs must have a bright yellow background and yellow letters against a black panel.

• Warning Signs: serious injuries or death MAY occur

 ‘WARNING’ text must be printed in black letters on an orange background. These signs may also include a bright blue
graphic depicting a safety precaution that should be taken in a specific area

• Danger Signs : serious injuries or death are VERY LIKELY to occur

 These signs should only be posted in areas where there is potentially deadly harm from dangerous equipment or other
environmental hazards, such as radiation, high voltage, or hazardous fumes, among others. Danger signs must be red,
black, and white, and include ‘DANGER’ printed in white lettering on a red, oval shaped background
Signs That Indicate Danger
•Notice Signs: signify lower risk areas and can also promote safety in the workplace or other public areas.

 These signs generally display rules such as ‘please wash hands’  or ‘keep this area clean’. Notice signs also are used for
distinguishing areas designated as ‘employees only’ and other low risk designations. Notice signs are blue and white.
•Safety Instructions Signs:  are used to relay general instructions and suggestions as they relate to safety
measures. Safety instruction signs must include a green panel with white letters and a white background. All letters
printed on the white background must be black.
•Safety Alert Symbols: The universal SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL is a yellow triangle, outlined in black,
containing an exclamation point. This symbol is only used on caution, warning, and danger signs, labels, or tags.
How to make the Laboratory A Safer
Place
1. Store Personal Items. Keep all bags and personal items off the ground. Items on the ground such as backpacks, purses, jackets,
etc. can potentially lead to tripping, slipping or falling. Personal items should be properly placed in a storage area or kept outside
the lab.
2. No Food or Drinks. Food and drink items should not be stored or consumed in a laboratory. With various toxins, chemicals
and hazardous materials a laboratory can contain, it can be dangerous to have food and drinks nearby.
3. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes eye and hand protection along with proper apparel and shoes.
4.Proper Disposal. Dispose of chemical waste through your facility’s waste disposal program in a timely manner.
5. Minimize Exposure. Reduce the levels of chemical exposure by implementing standard operating procedures. This may
consist of specific laboratory supplies and equipment, including guidelines for workers to follow to ensure the highest safety
measures.

6. Label. Identify and make sure all chemicals are labeled and stored correctly. Labels will cause less confusion
and help maintain an organized space.

7. Minimize Loud Noise. High levels of noise can lead to anxiety, distractions and fatigue for laboratory
workers, it’s important to maintain a quiet setting.

8. Protect Electrical Equipment. Make sure all electrical equipment is in good standing and follow the
manufacturer’s directions for maintenance and use.

9. Notify Supervisor of Damaged Equipment. Notify your supervisor immediately when equipment or

supplies appear to be damaged or not stored at the correct temperature.

10. Emergency Training. All laboratory workers should be educated on what to do in case of an emergency
within the lab. This information should also be covered in your facility’s lab safety guidelines.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, safety is important and vital to take into consideration. Thus, safety signs can help give a
specific message to those who may be exposed to hazards in the workplace. The message may be to
prevent accidents, signify health hazards, indicate the location of safety and fire protection equipment,
or for giving guidance and instruction in an emergency case.
