INSTRUCTIONS
This short answer assessment is one form of assessment that is used to collect evidence of
competency for this unit.
To demonstrate competence you must correctly answer all questions. Any shortfalls or wrong
responses may be followed up by your trainer in verbal, written or practical instance.
If more space is required for any answer you may attach a separate page containing name,
assessment date, unit title unit code and the assessment task number and attach this page with the
current assessment task before submission or alternatively use the back of each paper with a clear
reference to the relevant question(s).
Please note, once the assessor has marked your work they will provide you with feedback.
You will be required to complete other relevant assessment tasks for this unit as instructed by your
teacher or trainer.

Assessment 1 - Questions
Activity 1
1 Who is responsible for health and safety in the workplace, and what are their responsibilities?
Health and safety legislation places responsibility for workplace safety on employers and employees,
Employers are responsible for providing a safe workplace and safe systems of work and employees
have a res pensility to follow the health and safety rules outlined in the orgamiza‘ion ' spaliciesand
procedures. Employers must provide a safe work environment safe systems of work (ie safe ways to
do the work) information, instruction and training on health and safety to workers supervision
machinery, equipment, tools and substances in a safe condition .s
Workers must: -follow all reasonable instructions. -use any protective equipment that is provided. -not
put other workers or members of the public at risk
Procedures are the particular way tasks are to be done, Procedures describe a logical sequence of
activities that must be followed every time to complete a task correctly and safelv. Procedures can
include pictures or diagrams to help explain each step Procedures help workers do their jobs safely
and complv with the health and safetv laws
Activity 2
List five daily tasks that tourism, travel or hospitality workers might do and identify at least one safe
work practice for each of the tasks.
Example of daily tasks and safe work practice for tourism travel or hospitality are not limited to :-

1 List three safety directions workers might receive from their supervisors.
-safe use and maintenance of equipment and machinery. -carry a mobile phone so the worker is
contactable. -work in pairs for safety. -call the police if threatened by an aggressive customer/ guest. -
keep health and safety records.
2 Draw two safety signs workers might see and which are intended to warn them of impending
danger or the need to use safety equipment.
-equipment suchasboots ,hairnets, gloves, goggles -exit signs -fire hazard signs hand washing

Activity 4
1 What PPE do these visual signs indicate that workers must wear? Write a short sentence to
describe what protection from injuries each of these offer workers.
Hairnets minimise the risk of hair being caught in machinery ,They also help to
keep hair from contaminating food products
Aprons protect clothing from food stains etc and also contribute to protection
from burns.
Sturdy, closed in shoes prevent injury from objects (including knives or hot fats etc) being dropped on
workers' feet. Correct and correctly fitting footwear also contributes to reduring any long-term effects
of standing for long periods of time and will help to reduce fatigue and long-term foot condition.
Activity 5
1 To whom might workers report unsafe work practices or breaches of health, safety and security
procedures?
Workers could report unsafe work practice or breaches of health, safety and security procedure
supervisors, managers, security staff or to the police or officers from a government authority.
2 List three breaches of health, safety and security procedures that need to be reported.
-Breaches of health, safety and security procedures that might need to be reported incl not limited to:
-large amounts of uncollected rubbish utensils dropped on the floor and replaced on buffet tables
without cleaning lost keys incorrect manual handling of heavyboxes
-suspicious behaviour of workers or guests/ customers unusual noises or screaming faulty or damaged
equipment

1 What is an emergency?
An emergency is any situation that poses an immediate risk to health life property or environment
emergencies can happen at any time in any type of workplace .
2 List five emergencies travel, tourism and hospitality industry workers should be prepared for.
Example of emergencies travel, tourism and hospitality industry worker should be prepared for
include :-
- Fire
- -Flood
- -Power failure
- -Personal threats
- -Robbery or armed hold up
- -Chemical spills
- -Bomb threats

Activity 8
If workers receive an emergency warning they should respond promptly and in a calm manner , They
should follow the organizations emergency procedures and any additionally instruction given to
them at the time by emergency / fire wardens ,team leaders/ supervisors ,HSRs or emergency
service personnel such as fire or ambulance officers ,
2 What steps might be included in a typical response procedure for a medical emergency?
-do not attempt to move the person unless they are in immediate danger ,

Assistance can be sought from other employees or from external sources including but not limited to

What type of information might workers need to provide for emergency incident reports?
Workers might be asked to provide information on: what happened when it happened who was
involved how the emergency situation was resolved suggestions to prevent further emergencies of a
similar nature occurring
Activity 11
How can workers participate in health and safety management practices developed by their
organisation?
Workers can participate in the health and safety management practices developed by t organisation
by: becoming a HSR joining the HSC raising health and safety issues with HRs or supervisors
offering suggestions for new and safer ways to work encouraging other workers to use safe work
practices
Activity 12
1 What is consultation and why should employers and workers consult on health and safety issues?
Consultation means sharing and seeking information or opinions from one or more people prior to
decision making. Consultation should involve people who might affect the outcomes, or be affected
by the decisions made, and it might also include people with expertise in the topic that is being
discussed. Health and safety legislation requires employers to, so far as is reasonably practicable,
consult with workers. The intent of health and safety legislation is that employers and workers attempt
to resolve health and safety issues which arise and regular meetings between both parties assists this
to happen
2 List five opportunities workers might have to participate in health and safety consultation
processes.

2 How might workers raise health and safety issues in the workplace?
Organization will have procedure in place for raising health and safety issue with desigratted
personnel
for example some organization might require issue to be raised in writing by using email or a variety
of health and safety reporting forms other organization might require all health and safety issue to
be reported directly to HSRs rather than to team leader or supervisor .
3 A worker has raised a health and safety issue with their supervisor but it does not seem that any
action has been taken to resolve the issue. What should the worker do?
Health and safety issues might initially be raised by workers talking amongst themselves .
The worker might raise issue informally with there supervisor or the HSRs or they might raise it .
Assessment 2- Project
On Monday at about 9.30am a worker tripped over a power cord that was lying across a walkway in
the bar storage area. The worker fell to the ground with their hands out in front of them. There was
no blood at the scene but the worker’s left hand and wrist were very tender and looked quite
swollen. Two other workers saw the accident happen and helped the worker into a sitting position
on the floor. They called for the first aid officer who applied ice to the injured worker’s left wrist. The
first aid officer was concerned that the worker might have broken their left wrist so they arranged
for them to be taken to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. The HSR visited the site
of the accident and had the power cord taped to the floor to avoid any further accidents.
