3 Safety Notices
3.1 General Information
KLS Martin operating lights are quality products designed and manufactured in accordance with
the recognized technical rules. The products leave the factory in a perfectly safe working
condition.
To maintain this status, you – as the end user – are required to abstain from or prevent any
action that might have an adverse effect on the lights’ safety characteristics.

• Observe the following safety notices!

• Be sure to follow the instructions provided!

Should the light or any of its components become damaged or defective:

• Disconnect the light from the power supply!
• Safeguard the light or its components against dangerous contact with persons!
Place warning signs where appropriate.
• Contact the manufacturer or service technician at once!

Upon completion of any repair or service work, it is mandatory for the service technician to
check all functions of the light, the tracking and spring arms and the power supply units, thus
ensuring their proper working order and operational safety!

It is not permitted to attach to or install on the operating lights any components or systems
other than accessories that have been expressly approved by Gebrüder Martin.

Pilot Laser (Option)

The built-in pilot laser is a Class 2 laser according to the German DIN/VDE 0837 standard
(corresponds to EN 60825 and lEC 60825). These regulations, together with local accident
prevention regulations (VBG 93 for Germany), must be duly observed when operating the
laser.

Notice! Due to the eyelid closure reflex, the pilot laser radiation is harmless
for non-narcotized persons.

As long as the impact of the laser radiation is accidental and limited to a maximum period of
0.25 s, Class-2 laser equipment does not pose a danger to the human eye.

V 2.0 9
KLS Martin marLux®
X6 / X8 / H5 / H5 PLUS / H6 / H8 Operating Instructions

Therefore, Class-2 laser equipment may be used without any special protective measures,
provided that the application requires neither deliberate eye contact for more than 0.25 s nor
repeated eye contact with the direct or reflected laser radiation.
As the eye-protecting lid closure reflex cannot usually be taken for granted, we recommend
closing the eyes deliberately and turning away from the light source immediately if Class-2
laser radiation hits the eye.

WARNING! Danger of injury!

In the case of anesthetized persons, measures must be taken
to prevent the laser radiation from hitting the open eye for
more than 0.25 s. For example, cover the patient’s eyes with
a towel!

WARNING! Laser radiation!

These warning signs are attached to the sterilizable handle and next
to the control panel. The laser beam’s exit opening (aperture) is
located inside the central handle.
Note that the pilot laser is automatically activated for 2 seconds
whenever the operating light is repositioned.

It is the user’s own responsibility to observe and implement the above provisions/regulations.

3.2 Personal Protection

DANGER! Danger from defective lights!

Defective lights can damage the health or even threaten the lives of
users and/or patients!
Therefore, never operate defective lights!

WARNING! Danger from excessive heat development!

When using several lights in combination, the light fields should not
overlap when using maximum illuminance and very small light field
diameters. Non-compliance could pose a hazard of excessive heat
generation in the light field (> 1,000 W/m²).

10 V 2.0
KLS Martin marLux®
X6 / X8 / H5 / H5 PLUS / H6 / H8 Operating Instructions

DANGER! Danger from electric shock!

All marLux® X6/X8 lights incorporate a bulb that uses an electric

arc to produce light. Therefore, a high voltage of up to 5,000 VAC is
generated inside the light head when starting the lamp!
• Never dismount, repair or modify any light head component!
• Never reach into the light head when the sensoGrip handle has
been removed!

DANGER! Danger of injury!

As a rule, the open eye should never be exposed to intensive light
from these operating lights (whether direct or reflected). This applies
to both the patient and the OR personnel.

DANGER! Danger of injury!

Direct contact between the patient and the light head must be
avoided.

DANGER! Danger of explosion!

The operating light may be used only at a safe distance from
openings or surfaces emitting or releasing anesthetic gases, oxygen
or other flammable or oxidizing gases.

V 2.0 11
KLS Martin marLux®

3.3 Operation
• Prior to each use, be sure to check the lights for safe functioning and proper operating
condition!
• Be sure to handle the lights in accordance with the instructions provided in this manual
(including startup and withdrawal from service)!

DANGER! Danger from light failure!

When working with just one operating light, light failure cannot be
completely ruled out despite the automatic changeover to the second
(backup) bulb and despite the emergency changeover safety feature
(ASPS). Therefore, it is the surgeon’s responsibility to decide
whether or not the intended intervention can be carried out.

WARNING! Danger from excessive heat!

The lights feature filter systems that prevent the heat generated
inside the light head from radiating into the surgical field. The light
may never be operated without such filters. Defective filter glasses
must be replaced without delay.

CAUTION! Danger of light damage!

Protect the light from mechanical impact during operation, such as
may be caused by arm movements when inserting a hip prosthesis
or pulling off components. As these movements are usually
performed with edged or pointed instruments, the light’s glass can
be easily damaged or broken.

CAUTION! Danger of light damage!

Avoid collision with other OR equipment (such as ceiling-mounted
supply-and-suspension systems or articulated arm systems)!

CAUTION! Danger of light damage!

Adjust the light head’s position with care, approaching the arm stops
slowly and applying only moderate force!

3.4 Cleaning and Infection Protection

• In addition to the following safety notices, observe the cleaning and disinfection
instructions provided in section 9.

DANGER! Explosion hazard!

It is not permitted to use cleaning agents and disinfectants that can
create flammable, deflagrating or explosive gases or gas mixtures!

WARNING! Infection hazard!

To protect yourself against infection, maintenance or service work
should only be performed after the lights and associated equipment
have been adequately cleaned and disinfected where appropriate!

WARNING! Infection hazard!

Clean only cold lights! This avoids potential hazards due to
disinfectant or cleaning agent evaporation and a consequential
ineffectiveness of the disinfection because the disinfectant would not
have enough time to take effect.

CAUTION! Danger of light damage!

When using the “wiping” technique as permitted by Gebrüder Martin
for surface disinfection, apply only enough disinfecting liquid to
prevent the formation of “pools” and the consequential capillary
action through which the liquid could be drawn into the light head.

5 Description of the Lights

5.1 Filter Technology
Thanks to the proven KLS Martin filter technique, marLux® lights generate the KLS Martin
Super Cold Light characterized by a 99% suppression of all infrared radiation contents. At
the same time, the integrated color conversion technology ensures a color temperature of
4,300 K, which is optimal for surgical field illumination.

5.2 centriXbeam® (marLux® X6 / X8 / H6 / H8)

Variable, adaptive deep-cavity illumination
The marLux® X6/X8/H6/H8 lights offer variable reflector geometry. At the start of an
intervention, the surgeon needs low-shadow light from the outer, marginal regions of the
monoreflector.
As the operation proceeds, and especially for deeper body cavities, an additional “depth light”
is required. This optional function can be conveniently switched on via the control panel (1) to
increase illuminance in the deeper regions of the surgical field.
Switching off the deep-cavity illumination may be advantageous when distinct three-
dimensional structures are located in the beam path, leading to shadow formation and a
consequential deterioration of the viewing conditions.
There are two options for switching the depth light on and off – you can either use the
sensoGrip handle or the dedicated control panel button. When the depth light is on, a green
LED lights up in the button (1). Operating the button again switches the centriXbeam® off and
the LED goes out as a result (2).

Example: X8 centriXbeam®

5.3 Description of the marLux® H6 and H8 Lights

The marLux® H6/H8 lights are operated with halogen lamps and the latest IRC technology.
IRC bulbs offer a significantly higher light efficiency at a power input no higher than that of
conventional halogen lamps. A special bulb coating (so-called infrared coating) ensures that
the heat is reflected back to the filament and thus kept inside the bulb. This means more
operating efficiency as well as a higher light yield.

5.4 Starting Characteristics of the marLux® X6 and X8 Lights

The marLux® X6 and X8 operating lights are “intelligent” lights. When switching them off, the
current operating status (light field diameter and illuminance level) is stored and the substiLite
light source unit automatically moved into the bottom position (see section 7.2.1). To restore
the last-used operating status upon turning on the light, the installed motors move the
substiLite unit all the way to its outermost positions. This enables the system to check all the
reference points needed for determining the last-used operating status. During this “check
run” (which takes approx. 20 seconds), the light field diameter and illumination level keep
changing as a result of the adjustment process.
The marLux® X6/X8 operating lights have two bulbs: a halogen lamp and a metal halide
discharge lamp.
Upon switching on the light, the halogen bulb provides light immediately. At the same time,
the metal halide discharge lamp is started as well. In the case of a “cold start”, the discharge
lamp takes approx. 2 minutes to achieve 90% of its maximum output.
The halogen lamp does the job until the discharge lamp has reached its 90% output threshold.
At this point, the operating light automatically changes over to the discharge light source,
which means that the latter takes up the central position while the halogen lamp is moved out
of focus and switched off.

During temporary mains power failures, the (optional) emergency power changeover module
automatically switches over to battery operation (additional safety power supply, in short
ASPS, as part of the safety power supply or SPS system). The discharge lamp’s performance
remains totally unaffected by this process.
If the light is switched off and on again (“warm start”), the metal halide discharge lamp will
need approx. 10 minutes before it can be restarted by the ballast once it has cooled down. Just
as in the cold-start scenario, the halogen lamp substitutes for the discharge lamp (indicated by
the green control panel LED – see section 6.3), ensuring 100% illumination.

5.5 Optional Equipment for X6 and X8 or H5, H6 and H8 Lights

5.5.1 Emergency Power (ASPS) Changeover Module

All marLux® lights can be optionally equipped with an emergency power (ASPS) changeover
module, which can either be integrated into the ceiling tube or installed separately. Where the
light has an external power supply located in a switchbox, the ASPS changeover assembly is
installed on the same mounting plate as the power module.
A dual LED – which can be optionally installed in the canopy or on the mounting plate –
indicates the type of power supply currently used:

Green LED Safety power supply (SPS/mains)

Red LED Additional safety power supply (ASPS/battery)
5.5.2 KLS Martin surgiCamdigital

The KLS Martin surgiCamdigital is an imaging system for documentation and/or training
purposes. The system’s high-performance camera can either be integrated into the light head’s
central handle or installed on an arm of its own. The KLS Martin surgiCamdigital comes with a
separate user manual.
For image display, the optional KLS Martin medTFTpro flat-screen monitor system is used.

5.5.3 KLS Martin Pilot Laser

WARNING! Danger of eye injury!

In the case of anesthetized persons, measures must be taken
to prevent the laser radiation from hitting the open eye for
more than 0.25 s. For example, cover the patient’s eyes with
a towel!

The pilot laser integrated into the operating light marks exactly the center of the light field.
This makes it very easy to focus the light field on small surgical sites.
The pilot laser is automatically switched on as soon as the light is repositioned.

5.5.4 backLite

During endoscopic interventions, it is necessary to switch off the OR lighting temporarily to

make it easier for the surgical team to track the operation on the monitor.
In this scenario, the OR staff needs special orientation lighting to enable them to perform their
tasks.

The backLite option comes integrated into the operating light’s tracking arm. It provides the
necessary indirect, diffuse background illumination by way of LEDs (1) whose light is directed
upwards. It is switched on and off automatically in accordance with a preset ambient
illuminance threshold.

6 Operating the Lights

All KLS Martin marLux® lights can be controlled either via the control panel or via the
integrated sensoGrip handle.

6.1 Mounting the Sterilizable Handle

Prior to each operation, the light must be fitted with the sterilized handle (see section 7.1).

6.2 marLux® H5
The KLS Martin marLux® H5 light can only be operated via the sensoGrip handle (see
section 6.4). The light’s control panel located next to the light arm’s cardan joint features the
ON/OFF switch (1) plus two halogen lamp indicators (2, 3) (for halogen lamp indicator
functions, see section 6.3.)

6.3 Control Panel Operation

With the exception of the marLux® H5 model, all functions of the KLS Martin marLux®
operating lights can be conveniently controlled via a control panel that can be installed on the
cardan joint of the light arm (see left picture). However, it is also available – either
alternatively or additionally – in a wall-mounted version for use in the non-sterile area (the
picture on the right shows three control panels for a multi-light setup).

The various control functions available are marked with symbols. A slight finger touch is
sufficient to operate the pushbutton switches.

1 ON/OFF switch with standby function: “ON” = green LED lit; “OFF” = LED goes out
2 Halogen lamp (X6/X8)
This LED lights up green as long as the halogen lamp is active. In normal operation, this is the case
during the start-up phase of the metal-halide discharge lamp (cold start: approx. 2 min; warm
start: approx. 10 min). Consequently, this LED goes out as soon as the discharge bulb becomes
active (i.e. takes over).
This LED lights up red in the event of trouble (i.e. halogen lamp failure).
Halogen lamp (H6/H8):
This LED lights up green when the lower halogen lamp is active and the operating light is fully
operational. It lights up red if trouble/malfunction occurs.
3 Metal halide discharge lamp (X6/X8)
This LED lights up green when the discharge lamp is active and the light is fully operational. It
lights up red in the event of trouble (i.e. discharge lamp failure).
Halogen lamp (H5/H6/H8)
This LED lights up green when the upper halogen lamp is active and the light is fully operational. It
lights up red if malfunction occurs.
4 centriXbeam®: deep-cavity illumination ON/OFF (X6CX / H6CX / X8CX / H8CX)
A lit LED indicates that the central depth light has been activated.
Operating the button again switches off the depth light, thus reducing shadow formation.
5 Reduces the light field diameter
6 Reduces illuminance
7 Infrared sensor for optional remote control (currently under development)
8 Increases illuminance
9 Increases the light field diameter

The settings of buttons 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 are saved when the light is switched off. This last-used
operating status is then automatically activated when turning on the light the next time.

Notice! If the LEDs (2 and/or 3) light up red for more than 10 minutes, both
the discharge lamp and the halogen lamp must be replaced in the X6
and X8 models (for procedure, see section 7.2). As far as the H5,
H6 and H8 models are concerned, only the defective halogen lamp
needs to be replaced (see section 7.3).

6.4 Using the Sterilizable Handle (sensoGrip) for Light Control

The sensoGrip is a multifunctional handle whose microswitches respond to rotary movements
as well as up/down movements. Therefore, operating the sensoGrip handle in one of these four
directions can conveniently control various light functions.
Operating the sensoGrip handle is always accompanied by an acoustic signal (double beep).
To activate the respective functions, the sensoGrip handle must first be operated twice in the
same direction. Such “double-clicking” allows you to carry out the following functions for 5
seconds:

• Light field adjustment (from the user’s perspective)

- Rotating the handle leftwards increases the light field diameter.
- Rotating the handle rightwards reduces the light field diameter.
• Illuminance adjustment (for Vario models) *
- Pulling the handle downwards increases surgical field illuminance.
- Pushing the handle upwards reduces surgical field illuminance.
• centriXbeam® activation (only models with centriXbeam® feature)
- Pulling the handle downwards activates the centriXbeam®.
- Pushing the handle upwards deactivates the centriXbeam®.

*
Notice! H5 and H5 PLUS lights only offer light field adjustment (by rotating
the sensoGrip handle clockwise or counterclockwise as specified
above).

9 Maintenance and Care

To guarantee proper performance and keep the light in a good working condition, maintenance
and care should be performed with due diligence.

9.1 Cleaning and Disinfecting the Light’s Externally Accessible

Parts
All externally accessible parts of the light can be cleaned with neutral, surfactant-based
cleaning agents (mild dishwashing liquids, neutral cleaning agents).
For disinfecting, neutral disinfectants (such as surface disinfectants) based on aldehydes,
quaternary ammonium compounds (etc.) can be used.
To prevent humidity from penetrating into the light and/or the tracking and spring arms, never
spray these parts. Instead, just wipe them with a towel moistened with cleaning or disinfecting
solution.

9.2 Handle Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilization

To remove/install the sterilizable handle, refer to section 7.
The exchangeable handle can be machine-processed with the same programs as approved for
surgical instruments. The handle is thermostable and can be thermally disinfected at 93°C
(199.4°F).
The instructions provided by the manufacturer of your cleaning machine (washer-disinfector)
and the manufacturers of the treatment agents used must be observed as well.

The final rinse should be carried out with demineralized water to prevent spotting and the
formation of deposits.
Neutral or alkaline cleaning agents can be used for cleaning. However, cleaners containing
active chlorine should be avoided due to the chemical reaction between chlorine and plastic.

CAUTION! Danger of handle damage!

The handle should never be processed in a hot-air sterilizer,
as this would destroy the material!

The handle is steam-sterilizable, using a fractionated vacuum process at 134°C (273.2°F) for 5
minutes or 121°C (249.8°F) for 20 minutes (e.g. a sterilizer complying with
EN 285/ANSI/AAMI/ ISO 11134-1993 and ANSI/AAMI ST 46-1993, validated in accordance
with EN 554/ISO 13683 requirements). To prevent permanent (plastic) deformation, the
handle should be kept free from mechanical loads during sterilization.

Notice Useful life of the handles:

The exchangeable handles are subject to normal wear as a result of frequent
sterilization. If fatigue is detected in the material (cracks or tears, discoloration), be
sure to replace the handle.
