 Shipboard Familiarization

The video we watch gave us a lot of information and knowledge about the ship
familiarization. It is very important to familiarize the ship structure, equipment’s on deck
and engine and also you need to familiarize all the kinds of alarm in ship in order for you
to know what to do or action you may do if you hear an alarm in the ship.
The idea that I cope up in the video are there are different equipment’s on ship either
in the deck department or engine department and they have their different purposes in
making the voyage of the ship very safe to delivery the goods in the next port the
equipment’s that we familiarize in the film viewing are the Helm, Electronic chart, GPS,
GMDSS Radio Room. Also the video share the officers cabin were the officers can have
a rest if their duty is done, the officers lounge where the officers have a meeting or
having a discussion about something , The crew lounge where the crew members can
have some fun or take a rest, and the Infirmary of the ship were all the people of the
vessel can go if they are injured or suffering from illness, Crew mess the place where all
the crew members can have their food, Crew laundry where the crew wash or clean their
dirty clothes and uniform and the Officers Mess where the officers can eat. After the
Familiarization in the deck department next is in the lower platform of the ship the
Engine Room like in deck department the engine room also have a different machine that
make the ship run. First is the main engine the main engine is the heart of the ship
without the main engine the ship can’t run, the engine workshop where the engine
department can perform overhauling and maintenance of some part of the machineries in
the engine room, the engine room storage where all the documents of the engine where
stored. Turbo chargers where the efficiency of the engine will increase because of
turbocharger, boilers, generators and the purifier room where there the purifiers can
purify the lube oil or fuel oil. The primary goal of introducing those characteristics of
ship familiarization is to familiarize new workers to critical on board safety procedures,
emergencies, and proper ship technology use. Every new crew-member that joins the
ship is expected to be aware of and informed about their roles and obligations in terms of
equipment use, security, and safety on board. Ship Familiarization is very important to us
seafarers if you familiarize all the aspects in your ship your safety is secured. Ship
familiarization is important because it helps the newly joined crews to know more better
about the vessel. It’s highly recommended that each individual working at sea or in port
think before taking any action which could endanger themselves, the ship and/or their
crews.
The main aim of the familiarization training is to make the new crew aware of
important safety procedures that are to be carried out on ships while working or during
an emergency situations.
