When I was 16, my parents and I drove from Eveleth, Minnesota, to the
Guthrie Theater where we saw Molière’s The Miser starring Hume Cronyn
as Harpagon. It was a hot summer day, the air conditioning wasn’t working
and the actors were perspiring as the play progressed. When Hume took his
bows during curtain call, I noticed he was holding a towel. After the well-
earned applause subsided, the “miser” apologized to the audience for the
lack of cool air. He raised the towel, wiped his face and, in a vaudevillian
manner, wrung the towel as his sweat dripped on the stage. Of course,
there was more laughter and applause! After the show, I understood why

Artifacts of Guthrie Past

While most of the theater’s archived materials reside in the University of Minnesota’s
Performing Arts Archive, we keep a modest assortment in the Guthrie Library, which is
managed with great knowledge and care by Resident Dramaturg Carla Steen. Many treasures
live among the stacks: archival footage of past productions, rehearsal scripts, play posters
and more theater books than you can count. We unearthed a few gems from our private
collection that represent pieces of the Guthrie’s storied history.

Heels From Hamlet, 1963

These classic, black pumps were famously worn by actor
Jessica Tandy, who played Gertrude in the Guthrie’s first-ever
production of Hamlet. At the time, she was a Tony Award-
winning veteran of the stage, which made her addition to the
Guthrie’s first professional company (along with her husband,
Hume Cronyn) a big draw for Minnesota theatergoers.

Mask From The House of Atreus, 1967

The House of Atreus marked a key milestone for the theater:
After its acclaimed 1967 run at the Guthrie, it was revived in
1968 and then went on tour with The Resistible Rise of Arturo
Ui to theaters in New York City and Los Angeles. This mask
for the Ghost of Clytemnestra was worn by former Artistic
Director Douglas Campbell in our 1967 production. The
headpieces were created with lightweight materials and used
bike helmet interiors to keep them secure during the show.

12 \ GUTHRIE THEATER
Oedipus the King
Rehearsal Script, 1972
On day one of rehearsal, company members
receive a script to mark up and highlight
their lines as they work on the show from
table read to opening night. We pulled the
script from Oedipus the King, which was
directed by former Artistic Director Michael
Langham. Look closely and you’ll see his
signature on the title page.

Fanfare Trumpet, 1963

Specially crafted with extended brass piping to hold ceremonial banners and provide
dramatic flair, this herald trumpet is one of three that were used to play the Guthrie’s
signature fanfare. In the past, musicians played the fanfare live just before showtime
at the original theater on Vineland Place. Today, we play a recording
of that same fanfare in the lobbies to announce when a
performance is about to begin.

Costume Rendering by Tanya Moiseiwitsch, 1964

Tanya Moiseiwitsch was a prominent theater designer who worked
with Sir Tyrone Guthrie at the Stratford Festival in Canada before
helping him found the Guthrie. In addition to designing our iconic
thrust stage, she served as the Guthrie’s principal designer for many
seasons. This costume sketch from Volpone features a bold look for
the role of Mosca played by actor George Grizzard.

What Is
It About
Hamlet?
By Carla Steen
Resident Dramaturg

Hamlet holds a special place in the Guthrie Theater’s metaphorical heart. When Sir Tyrone
Guthrie opened the new theater in May 1963 with the Shakespeare play, the choice was both
a challenge and a statement: “We would open with Hamlet, practically uncut; an indication,
we hoped, that the audience was being regarded as fully adult and willing to make a
considerable effort of concentration, and was not being condescended to and treated as if
not fully witted merely because Minneapolis has the misfortune to be so far from Broadway,”
he writes in A New Theatre, his book about founding the Guthrie.

SYNOPSIS
Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, mourns the recent death of his beloved father and questions the hasty
remarriage of his mother, Gertrude, to his uncle Claudius, his father’s brother. But it’s not until the ghost of
Old Hamlet appears early one morning to reveal he was murdered and implore revenge that Hamlet sets
out to get justice for the late king.

First, however, Hamlet needs more evidence than a supernatural — and possibly evil — entity’s word for it.
Distrusting nearly everyone around him except his friend Horatio, Hamlet feigns madness and distances
himself from Ophelia, with whom he’s been romantically linked. But Hamlet’s behavior draws the notice of
Claudius and his advisor, Polonius (Ophelia’s father), who work together to uncover the cause of Hamlet’s
“madness.” When the opportunity presents itself, Hamlet sets a trap in the form of a play to be performed
at court to finally confirm the circumstances of his father’s murder.

The play successfully reveals Claudius’ guilt, but as events spin out of control, Claudius takes action to
protect himself and Gertrude by ridding Denmark of its erratic prince. Hamlet proves too smart for the
plan, and a final showdown is set in motion that leaves the country’s royal family devastated and the
Danish kingdom vulnerable to an invasion by Norway.

WHO’S THAT IN THE CORNER?

Composer/Musician Jack Herrick has a better-than-
front-row seat for every Hamlet performance. In fact,
he’s been close to the action since the first day of
rehearsal. Herrick arrived at the Guthrie with what
he described as “a vanload of strange and bizarre
instruments” that he used to create the play’s almost
cinematic score. As actors rehearsed, he would
noodle, offer and adjust the musical accompaniment,
crafting and refining as the scenes developed. Among
his “bizarre” instruments are a pump organ, gong,
trombone mouthpieces, various stringed instruments
and a bass drum. Created in collaboration with Sound
Designer Darron L West, the soundscape considers
character development that happens before the
scenes or offstage to fill in the gaps, which Herrick
does live and onstage for each performance.
