Writing
(2 Parts- 40 minutes)

Part 1: You are talking to Nigel in a chat room about “Education for All”, a volunteer education
program you recently joined aimed at improving education opportunities in high-needs schools
throughout Malaysia. Answer Nigel using complete sentences. Use 30-40 words per answer. You
have 10 minutes to complete all 3 answers.

N- Welcome to the program! I have been a member for 6 months now. Why did you decide to join?

You- Hi Nigel! I decided to join “Education for all” because I am concerned about the lack of education
opportunities in high-needs schools especially schools which are in the rural areas. I would like to offer
my help in improving the opportunities in these schools.

N- So what type of volunteer work would you like to try first?

You-Firstly, I would like to volunteer as a teaching assistance (t). If it is available, I would like to teach in
one of the rural schools to enable me to reach out to those unfortunate students who are in dire needs for
better educations. ---A great example of a second and first mixed conditional. If (present simple)-outcome
(modal)

N- Apparently our program will be getting funding from the Government. How do you think we should
allocate these funds?

You-Well, I think we should allocate these funds according to priority. We need more teaching materials
and resources to assist in the teaching and learning process to make sure that the students get the best
educations regardless of where their schools are. Therefore if we could allocate more funds in providing
resources, we might provide better education to the students. –another great conditional (2nd)

Part 2: You have been preparing for the annual fundraiser dinner “Education for All” for a few
months. You receive this email from the club:
Dear Member
We are writing to inform you that we have decided to cancel next month’s annual fundraiser
dinner due to lack of support. Since we are only a month away, we feel it is not enough time
to gather the necessary support in time for the event. We apologize to those who have been
preparing and appreciate your hard work. If you have any comments or suggestions, please
feel free to email the club secretary.

Write an email to a friend. Write your feelings and suggest possible alternatives. Write about 50
words. You have 10 minutes.

Hi Juana,

Have you read the notice? It’s ridiculous! The annual fundraiser dinner that we’ve planned

laboriously will be cancelled due to lack of support, which I think they could postpone to a later date.

We have put in so much effort and hard work for months. If I’d known it was going to be cancelled I

would not have volunteered myself in the fundraising.

You are now crowned the queen of conditional sentences! – here we have a 3 rd conditional

Helen.

Write an email to the club secretary. Explain your feelings and make suggestions. Write 120-150
words. You have 20 minutes.

Dear Sir,

My name is Helen and I have been a member since last January. I am writing regarding the notice that you

placed on the site. I am very much disappointed by the information and would like to make some suggestions.

Firstly, the fact that the annual fundraiser dinner needs to be cancelled is wholly disheartening as we have

put in so much effort and hard work in preparing for the dinner. Secondly, I would like to make a suggestion.

Perhaps we could postpone the fundraising dinner to a later date to give us more time to prepare for the
dinner. If we could postpone it to December maybe we could get the support from volunteering groups

such as private companies which are surely eager to offer some support.

Yours faithfully, Helen.

Yours faithfully,
