How did you first get into
skateboarding?
We were in a Reject Shop
with $10 to spend and my
brother, Liam, suggested
that I buy a skateboard
with the money. It was only
a little toy one but it was
enough to get me hooked.
What’s your favourite thing
about the sport?
The feeling of landing a
great new trick and being
able to travel and hang
out with some really
amazing people.
You also snowboard, what
similarities or differences
do you find between the
two sports?
The weather! It is often cold

Many of the tricks are the
same but you can get
bigger air snowboarding.
How do you deal with big
stacks? We’d be pretty
scared!
It can be scary for sure
when you are trying a new
trick but I tend to skate
within my ability so if I don’t
think that there is a good
chance that I will land it, I
generally don’t push my
luck. A lot of skaters try
and slam out big tricks and
maybe land 1 in 10 but I
build up slowly. You learn to
fall and roll so that you don’t
hurt yourself.
What’s the scariest thing to
ever happen to you?
The first time I fell on the
big rail in training for the
Nationals competition at
Riverslide Skate Park in
Melbourne and I ended up
coming off badly.
Who do you look up to?
Lacey Baker from the USA,
she is a legend in female
skateboarding. Outside
skateboarding there are so
many inspirational athletes
too, like Lydia Lassila in ski
aerials.
You recently went to the
X Games over in the US,
what was that like?
It was one of the best
experiences of my life. It
was like nothing that I had
ever done before. I was
honoured to be invited and
to skate against the best in
the world. To finish in 8th
place out of 18 competitors
was so exciting and I was
the youngest in the field.

Peta Clarke has been a professional animal trainer for over 20 years
and has worked with animals on film, TV and stage! We chat to her about
her cool job and also her involvement with the Dog Lovers Show…
Hi Peta! Can you share with
us some of your experiences
on projects that you’ve
worked on?
I’ve certainly been in the right
place at the right time a lot. I
think working on Babe: Pig in
the City all those years ago
was one of the most incredible
experiences I could have ever
asked for. I had very little
experience back then and to
be dropped in the middle of a
make-believe world like that
where the whole movie was
animals was truly incredible.
The animals I worked with, the
people I met.
While amazingly fun
and interesting, working
professionally on huge
productions like that is
incredibly nerve wrecking at
times and you really never
know what the animal has to
deal with until you get on set.
Often production companies
will call and tell us, “It’s just
a sit stay for the dog”. You

really have to make sure you
know what is happening in
the scene WHILE the dog is
doing a sit stay. We have
had pyrotechnics – fire, wind
machines, props department
throwing leaves at the
dog, people running past
screaming... thus the saying in
the industry “there is no such
thing as just a sit stay”.
Have you had any bloopers
on set with your dogs?
How many do you want?...
One of the best memories I
have – funniest by a long shot
– was one of my Chihuahuas
in Legally Blonde the Musical
running on to the stage and
at the exact moment he was
in the spotlight, get an itchy
botty and bum scoot across
the stage. What can you do? It
was hilarious.
What advice would you give
to Little Angel readers who
want to be an animal trainer
one day?
That’s easy – train. The more
you practice, the better you
get. There are lots of books
and information available
that will help you grow your
knowledge, but nothing other
than training will help you be a
better trainer. In the same way
that you can’t learn to drive a
car well without getting behind
the wheel, you can’t learn to
train animals without training
animals! And train species you
can’t push and pull around.
Goldfish are great to train,
so are canaries. As soon as
you have to earn an animal’s
trust and you can’t physically
manipulate them, your training
skill will skyrocket and training
dogs will become pretty easy
for you.
You’ve done quite a few Dog
Lovers Shows, what’s your
favourite thing about them?
The first ever Brissy Dog Lovers
Show will be number 7 for me.
There is a lot to love. Working
with wonderful people like
Dr Chris Brown and Dr Harry
Cooper is awesome. I love

presenters and trainers on a
regular basis and see what
they are up to with their dogs,
but I think my favourite thing
is sharing my knowledge and
helping folk understand their
dogs a little more and see how
incredibly lucky we are to have

show UnderDogs – what is
it about?
We were so proud to be able

Melbourne Dog Lovers Show
this year and have since
performed at several other
events. UnderDogs is a show
that is dedicated to every dog
and every owner. No dog or
human is perfect and it’s this
central fact that we embrace
in the show. The dogs and
I work through a number of
key ways about getting the
best out of every dog – by
accepting them as them and
focusing on their uniqueness.

easy ways anyone can build
confidence and trust in a dog,
build a communication system
and trusting relationship... Oh
and laughter. There is a lot
of laughter.
Do you have any dogs of
your own?
I don’t know what I would do
without my dogs! I currently
live with five dogs – from a 2kg
Chihuahua to a 27 kg bulldog.
I have a mix of breeds and
cross breeds, second and first
hand dogs. The huge variety
of types and personalities is a
constant reminder that animal
training is about working with
the animal in front of you,
which means changing things
to help that individual learn
and feel safe and happy. I’m
constantly grateful for their Catch Peta and
easy outlook on life as it helps UnderDogs (as well as
me to not sweat the small stuff plenty more adorable
