PROSPERO

International prospective register of systematic reviews

To enable PROSPERO to focus on COVID-19 submissions, this registration record has undergone basic
automated checks for eligibility and is published exactly as submitted. PROSPERO has never provided peer
review, and usual checking by the PROSPERO team does not endorse content. Therefore, automatically
published records should be treated as any other PROSPERO registration. Further detail is provided here.

of Beta-alanine Supplementation on Performance in the Repeated Sprint Abilty (RSA) test: A Systematic

Review question
What is the effect of beta-alanine supplementation on the performance of the RSA test?

Searches
The searches will be done on PubMed; Scoups; Web of Science; SPORTDiscus; Google Scholar;

The search terms ‘beta alanine’ linked with ‘repeated sprint ability’.

There will be no language restrictions. There will be no restriction on the year of publication.

The searches will be re-run just before the final analyzes and further studies retrieved for inclusion.

Types of study to be included

Double-blind, randomized controlled trials with crossover design or counterbalanced.

Condition or domain being studied

Beta-alanine supplementation and RSA test performance.

Participants/population
Inclusion Criteria: Healthy humans’ males and females, of any age or activity level;

Exclusion Criteria: Studies conducted on clinical populations, or diseased; Studies conducted on animals;

Intervention(s), exposure(s)
Repeated sprint ability

Comparator(s)/control
Chronic ingestion (>1day) of beta-alanine supplementation compared to placebo without fatigue state

Main outcome(s)
Total work done, best (fastest sprint time or highest power output – usually corresponding to the initial sprint
– recorded/achieved during the repeated sprint ability (RSA) test) and last sprint performances during
repeated
Measures of effect
Mean, standard deviations, effect size and confidence intervals.

Additional outcome(s)
None
Measures of effect
None

Data extraction (selection and coding)

A three stage approach will be used to screen potential studies, i.e. title/abstract; full-text screen and full text
appraisal. Data will be extracted using a pre-piloted and standardised form, and include information related
to study design; participant characteristics; dosing strategy and duration; participant retention; primary study
outcomes and results; All screening, selection and data extraction procedures will be independently
undertaken by two members of the review team, and final outcomes from each procedure will be agreed
through discussion, or third party mediation if required.

Risk of bias (quality) assessment

The risk of bias will be accessed through a form analysis, funnel plot and the heterogeny levels.

Strategy for data synthesis

We will use a correction strategy (Hedge's) to combine the values of the crossover and parallel studies. A
fixed effect will be used when the variables are in the same classes or random when there are
methodological differences.

Analysis of subgroups or subsets

If necessary, subgroup analyzes will be made when the data refer to similar conditions.
