The purpose of this lesson is so that students can understand that the reason

why we have daytime and nighttime is because the earth is always spinning
around the sun.
● Introduce Powerpoint about Daytime and Nighttime
○ Turn and Talk (What do we see in the sky when it’s daytime?
How about nightitme?)
○ Go over diagram of Earth and explain how the Earth spins,
how long it takes, and the Earth’s axis & North + South
Pole
○ Holding Hands Activity (one person is the sun, another
person is the Earth, and they spin to demonstrate the Earth

○ Show Daytime & Nighttime Video (Class Discussion –
What causes day and night?)
○ Go over sun activity and day + night diagram
● Introduce what Sundials are and their history
● Move onto Sundial Activity
● Come back together and share Sundials and review vocabulary
● Introduce the Exit Ticket and homework assignment
Sundial Activity:
Learning Task
Once everyone is done, choose students to show the sundial they worked
Closing / on.
Debrief
Go over what the sundial shows and is used for.
