A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN GENERAL SCIENCE

FOR GRADE SEVEN IN EARTH AND SPACE

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of 60-minute lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. Illustrate the position of the earth, sun and moon during eclipses
2. Explain how solar and lunar eclipses occur

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Earth and Space
a. Topic:
Eclipses: Solar and Lunar Eclipse

b. References:
K to 12 Learner’s Material for Grade 7 Science pg. 97-98
K to 12 Learner’s Teacher’s for Grade 7 Science pg. 134-139

c. Materials:
Visual aids, pictures, flashlight, big balls and small balls

d. Concepts:
Eclipse is an occasion where one celestial body such as the moon, sun and planet casts a
shadow to another celestial body. There are two types of eclipse: Solar and Lunar
Eclipse. In a solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. When the
earth comes between the sun and the moon lunar eclipse can occur.

e. Process:
Explaining, Illustrating

f. Values Integration
Appreciating the importance of the occurrence of the eclipses and how it affects human
lives.

III. LEARNING ACTIVITY

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

Everybody is requested to stand for the prayer. The learners pray.

2. Greetings:

Good morning class! How are you today?

It’s nice to hear that.

3. Daily Routine:

Before you take your seats, kindly pick-up pieces of papers

under your chairs and keep unnecessary things on top of
your armchair. Also, arrange your chairs properly.

4. Checking of Attendance
Learners pick-up trashes and
Ms. Secretary, kindly give me the list of absentees for today. arrange their chairs

5. Collection of Assignments

Did I give you an assignment last meeting class? The secretary checked the
attendance.

B. Review

What was our lesson last meeting?

Very good!

What are the four seasons?

Yes! What are the factors that contribute to the phenomenon

of regularly changing seasons? (learners raise their hands)

Very good! Season changes because the earth is tilted as it

revolves around the sun.

For this morning we will be discussing a new topic. It is a

phenomenon which involves the sun, the moon, and the
earth.

C. Objectives

I have posted on the board the objectives for today’s lesson.

Kindly read.

Thank you. As we go along with our discussion, we will be

encountering difficult words, so it would be an advantage to
know them beforehand. Class, please read the terms.
1. Phenomena

2. Rotation

3. Revolution

4. Celestial body The learners read the objectives.

5. Cast

6. Lunar

7. Solar The learners read the terms.

8. Umbra

9. Penumbra

10. Satellite

Now we have unlocked difficult words we will now move

on with our discussion.

D. Motivation

Okay, we are going to watch a video. After viewing, I will

ask you some questions based on what you observed. Am I
clear?

(playing video)

What did you see in the video?

Very good!

Why do you think there is shadow?

The learners watch the video.

A shadow is formed when there is an object blocking the
light.

In the video, what do you think is the object blocking the

light?

You have mentioned light and shadow. Light and shadow

has something to do with our lesson for today.
E. Discussion

When you were in Grade 6, you learned about the heavenly

bodies in the solar system. Our planet, which is the earth,
rotates on its axis as it revolves around the sun. At the same
time the moon, which is the satellite of the earth, rotates
around its mother planet.

As these heavenly bodies move there will come a time that

they will align. The alignment of these heavenly bodies is
what we called Eclipse. Kindly read the definition of eclipse.

From the video, you have observed that the shadow is

formed because something is blocking the source of light. So
today we will have an activity for you to know if there are
also shadows in space.

F. Activity
Eclipse is a phenomenon where
Before going deeper into our discussion, let's first discuss one celestial body casts a shadow
our activity. to another celestial body.

You already have a group, right?

Here is your activity.

Time is up! Take your seats now. Kindly submit your group
answers.

In your activity, what does the big ball represent?

How about the small ball?

What did you see on the surface of the big ball when the
small ball blocked the light?
Where does the shadow come from? (learners go to their group)

We have just illustrated the formation of shadows of

astronomical objects in space. When shadows are formed in
astronomical objects, a darkening effect is observed and this
phenomenon is called an eclipse.

How do eclipses happen?

Eclipse occurs only when the moon, the earth, and the sun
are in line with one another.

Actually, we have two types of eclipses, the solar and lunar

eclipse.

(teachers shows the illustration)

What did you observe in the illustration?

From the illustration, what comes between the sun and the
earth?

Very good! The moon is between the sun and the earth.

This diagram shows a solar eclipse. Can you define solar

eclipse?

Exactly! Where does the shadow of the moon fall?

Very good!

In the illustration class, did you notice the unequal shading

of the shadow?

What have you observed about the color of the inner and
outer shadow?

Actually this unequal shading of the shadow is the umbra

and penumbra.

Who among you here can differentiate umbra from

penumbra?

Any volunteer, will you come forward and point to us the

umbra or the darkest part of the shadow?

If you are within this umbra, what will you experience?

This area here will experience a total solar eclipse (teacher

pointing the umbra). And this is what a total solar eclipse Eclipses happen when the sun,
looks like. moon and earth align with each
(teacher shows a picture) other.

How about when you are within the penumbra of the earth’s
shadow? What will you experience?

Yes, very good! This area here will experience a partial solar
eclipse.

(teacher shows a picture)

….

This time, we will proceed to our second set-up.

Kindly describe the alignment of the heavenly bodies in our

second set-up?

Very good!

At this time the earth is between the sun and the moon.

Why do you think there’s a change in their alignment class?

Umbra is the innermost and

darkest part of a shadow and
Very good! The earth and the moon are not stationary which comes with a total eclipse of an
means that the moon revolves around its parent planet which object while Penumbra is .
is the earth while the earth is revolving around the sun. As a
result, there will come a time that they will align. When the
sun-earth-moon aligns respectively they will create a lunar
eclipse.

When does the lunar eclipse occur?

Lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is in the full phase.

This time the shadow of the earth is seen on the moon.

I have here an illustration of a lunar eclipse in which the

earth is located between the sun and the moon.

(teacher shows an illustration)

Kindly point where the umbra is in the illustration?

Very good! This is the umbra and this area will see a total
lunar eclipse. (teacher shows a picture)

Using the illustration, who can show us the penumbra?

Very good! This area will experience a partial lunar eclipse.

This is how the Partial Lunar Eclipse looks like.

(teacher shows a picture)

Very good! Not all the time these heavenly bodies are
aligned. An eclipse will only happen if the sun-earth-moon
or sun-moon-earth is aligned.

Is there any question?

F. Application
Eclipses do not happen every day, right?

That’s why if there’s an eclipse, we are all amazed.

What do you usually do if there’s an eclipse?

Take a look at this picture.

What have you observed in the picture?

What do you think is the proper precaution in viewing an

eclipse?

Very good! We should use approved filters in viewing an

eclipse.

Why do we have to use filters class?

We all know that directly looking at the sun will damage our
eyes. How about in lunar eclipse class?

Class, you can watch lunar eclipses. They are completely

useful to watch. You don’t need any protective filters
because it does not cause any harm to our eyes.

G. Generalization

Now class I know that you have learned a lot from what we (Ian pointing umbra)
had just discussed about the solar and lunar eclipse.

Illustrate the position of the sun, moon and earth during solar
eclipse.

Illustrate the position of the sun, moon and earth during

lunar eclipse.
How does Lunar Eclipse occur?

Lunar eclipse occurs when the sun-earth- moon are aligned.

How does Solar Eclipse occur?

Solar eclipse happens when the moon is between the sun and
the earth.

Again, why don’t we usually experience an eclipse class?

You are now able to explain how solar and lunar eclipses
occur.
