COURSEWORK
PROGRAMME : BACHELOR OF QUANTITY SURVEYING (HONS) – AP224
SEMESTER: MAC – AUGUST 2023
COURSE : CONSTRUCTION ECONOMICS II (BQS556)
OBJECTIVES
The students should be able to:
• Understand the process of collecting and compiling relevant cost data.
• Develop an analytical approach towards the evaluation of cost data application in preparing Preliminary
Estimate.
• Understand the process of preparing Preliminary Estimate for different types of projects.
You are required to prepare a PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE for the construction of a building that includes the
following items:
1. Building cost
2. Cost of external works
3. Cost of Mechanical & Electrical work
4. Preliminaries
5. Contingencies
Select only one building type from any of the following options:
1. Residential house (bungalow/semi-detached, terrace house, apartment)
2. Commercial buildings (offices, shop lots, shop offices)
3. Mosque
4. Multipurpose Hall
• Identify the different types and sources of cost data required for preparing the estimate by using the FLOOR
AREA METHOD.
• For each of the cost data identified, explain how the cost data is used and adjusted to suit the proposed
project condition/requirement.
• Critically comment on the limitation/difficulties in the collection, adjustments and application of the cost data.
*note: Students are encourage to select a single building that is manageable to do a simple single price estimating.
Choose a category of building that have accessibility to previous historical cost data.
INSTRUCTIONS
• The task is to be undertaken by group of 5-6 students maximum.
• The written report must be written on A4 paper (computer print-out), with Arial 11, 1.5 spacing, justifies with
4cm left margin and 2cm on top, bottom and right margin.
• Submission : Week 10

ASSESSMENT
The total marks for this assignment is 100 marks. It will contribute to 30% of the coursework marks.
The assessment of this assignment will be divided into two parts:
i) Written report & Preliminary Estimate/PDA = 20%
ii) Presentation = 10%
