Formal Communication

• Formal Communication includes business related flow of information.

It is mainly of three types:
• 1) Horizontal: Information flows between employees at the same level.
• 2) Vertical: Information flows upwards or downwards (seniors to
juniors to seniors)
• 3)Diagonal: Cross functional between employees at different levels.
• All this is restricted within one organization.
• Can you think of situations when the above mentioned
communication takes place?

Informal communication
• An informal means of communication involves a casual
exchange of ideas and thoughts between people which might
be spontaneous and not prescribed
• It does not conform with official rules, systems, formalities
and chain of command
• Informal communication at workplace is known as
‘Grapevine’

name is John and that he is inside the house. The police bust in on a carpenter,
