The Impact of Computer Tablets to the Students' Homework capabilities

Abstract: - This study provides some questions for the
students who still uses their tablets in terms of
academics and to see if it helps them improve or if it
is a hindrance to their studies. When it comes to the
survey, the study is correlational research focusing on
the impact of Computer Tablets to the grade 12
Students’ Homework capabilities that are enrolled at
San Mateo Senior High School under all strands
except Cookery B and Cookery C. Given that the
form's questions are completely open-ended and are
written in both languages: English and Filipino. It is
possible that the respondents will finish it in less time
than 10 minutes. The mean and standard deviation
will be obtained in order to employ statistics in this
investigation. The estimated respondents for this
study are eighty-nine (89) and it did not meet the
requirements, since the sixty-six percent (66%) of the
estimated sample are either not using the Computer
Tablet or they are not bothered to answer the online
survey. Based on the answers that the students gave
us, we concluded that the computer tablets that San
Mateo Senior High School gave to all of its pupils may
be useful as a tool to help them with their academic
achievement, but they have some drawbacks as well.
It is true that other technologies can outperform the
tablet in terms of capability and overall performance,
but this does not imply that everyone has access to
equipment that is extremely powerful and can
outperform the tablet.

1. INTRODUCTION & RATIONALE
I. Background of the Study
Technology plays an important role in our society; they
assist humans in making their jobs or objectives more
efficient and less time consuming. The same goes for
using technology at school, where all students use it to
help them with academic activities, homework, projects,
and even exam preparation. Teachers, on the other hand,
use technology to help them create or prepare digital
presentations, activities, and even examination
questionnaires for their students. According to Kumar,
(2018), it is said that the students’ learning and
interactivity at their respective school are increasing due
to the use of modern equipment technology and tools. It
is also said that it was way more interactive and students
can have interesting ideas or they can be creative at
things digitally when aided by technology. The students'
problem during online classes, and up until now, has
been a lack of technology to assist them with their
academic performances and activities. One of the causes
of this could be the students' financial situation, their
socioeconomic status, or societal demand, which affects
the cost of technology. Most students in the online class

had difficulties with their academic performance at the
time, because some of them had to borrow some of the
technologies or even persevere on what they only had;
there were some times when students were allowed to
have a physical copy of the module that was given by the
school's permission and do self-study at their own pace.
According to Magsambol, (2022), the Department of
Education ordered that all public and private schools
should transition in a 5 days in-person or face-to-face
classes, as it will start at the 2nd of November 2022.
However, the problem for every student who is
transitioning from online learning to a face-to-face class
is adjusting their mindsets and time management because
some schools have afternoon sessions, even though this
could be done in a week or two. Another issue is that
students are used to having technology on their hands and
using it as a learning material at school. The proposed
solution to this problem is to provide computer tablets to
students as a companion or assistance, and it may be the
only thing allowed inside of their respective school. In
this way, it provides students with the compatibility that
they can do their digital homework, or projects with ease
as it meets the minimum requirements and with the
assistance of their government. The purpose of the
Computer Tablets is to provide students who do not have
their own technological support as stated in the given
problem. Students may also use it on anything other than
school-related stuff unless it is prohibited by their school,
because some students may not use it or use it in ways
that it was not intended to be used; downloading games,
selling them for a profit, or even using the interior or
circuit parts for experimentation or sale are examples of
this. Its sole purpose is to assist students during their
face-to-face learning as they are still transitioning or
changing mindsets from being online learning for almost
two years. It could also be their tool for communicating
with their fellow classmates and even teachers, and they
can watch or read news whenever they want. Some
students may not have received a tablet, but that is okay
in today's generation where technology is growing and
being used for educational purposes and good deeds for
all students.
This study will be able to contribute, provide
information, and knowledge on the impact of computer
tablets on the academic performance of San Mateo
Senior High School grade 12 students. More specifically,
this research will benefit various groups of people.
Students, not just grade 12 students can use the
information, and not only students enrolled at San Mateo
Senior High School will benefit from this study, as it can
be implemented at any grade level and school that
intends to provide Computer Tablets as technological
assistance to their students. Teachers, Parents and
Guardians, and Future researchers will also benefit to the
given information from this study.

II. Research Questions
This study aims to investigate the effects of
Computer Tablets to the Homework capabilities of the
Students of San Mateo Senior High School for school
year 2022-2023, specifically this study is answering the
following question:
1. How often do the students use Computer
Tablets?
2. In what extent does the use of Computer tablets
help the students in their academic performances in terms
of:
2.1 Completing assignments/activities.
2.2 Completing performance task
2.3 Preparations for examinations
3. What are the challenges and difficulties of the
students in using Computer Tablets in their studies?
III. Scope and Limitations
This study is a correlational type of research
focusing on the impact of Computer Tablets to the grade
12 Students’ Homework capabilities at San Mateo Senior
High School under all strands: Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Humanities and
Social Sciences (HUMMS); Accountancy, Business, and
Management (ABM); and Technical, Vocational, and
Livelihood (TVL) except Cookery B and Cookery C.
Furthermore, the only exception to the study is the use of
Cellphones, Laptops, Computers and the limited quantity
of the other Computer Tablets that was lent by the school
and the study will not attempt to measure these variables
on the basis of data.
2. METHODOLOGY

The study's methodologies, respondents, data
collection tool, and statistical tool that will be used to
interpret the data are all covered in this chapter. This
study employs a descriptive methodology to examine
how students at San Mateo Senior High School's
homework capabilities is impacted by their possession of
computer tablets provided by the school for the academic
year 2022–2023. According to McCombes, (2022), the
purpose of a descriptive research is to accurately and
methodically describe a particular or selected population,
circumstance, or phenomenon. It provides answers to the
questions what, where, when, and how, but leaves out the
why. Descriptive research is considered a suitable option
when the goal of the study is to determine the traits or
frequencies. The sampling technique that the researchers
are going to use is the purposive sampling. The
respondents are the grade 12 students who enrolled at
San Mateo Senior High School for the school year 2022-
2023, both academic and non-academic strand are
involved to be the respondents in the study, and we have
estimated our samples which is eighty-nine (89) using
the Slovin’s formula on selecting the students. An online
survey questionnaire will be utilized in the study as the
instrument to collect data, and Google Forms will be
used because it is a reputable website for creating such
online survey questionnaires. As stated in the instrument

to gather data, the researchers will create an online
survey questionnaire and send it to the respective class
presidents of the respondents. As the questions are both
in English and Filipino, the time taken for the
respondents to complete the form may be less than 10
minutes as all of the questions are open-ended questions.
The statistical tool that will be used in the study are by
obtaining the mean and standard deviation.
3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter discuss the results of the given
online survey that has been accomplished by the
researchers. The researchers estimated respondents
which is eighty-nine (89) that did not meet the
requirements, since the 66% of the estimated sample are
either not using the Computer Tablet or they are not
bothered to answer the online survey.

minutes; and 1 hour and above.

Based on the results to Table 1.1, one of the choices “1
hour and above” has the highest frequency out of the
three, which means that students who uses the Computer
Tablet in a day could take up 1 hour or more on their
manner of living, and the least frequency is the choice
“31 to 59 minutes” where students usually tend to stop
using the Computer Tablet before 30 minutes of usage or
over an hour of usage.
