The aim of the study was to create

awareness of “DRUG ADDICTION”. The questionnaire
were created and collected the information for
location (i.e.) Angalakuduru palle in and around the
surroundings of Tenali. The WHO adds to this
definition by stating that health does not just refer
to the objectives of living but also resources
everyday life.

Drugs, cocaine, morphine, who-world health

AWARENESS OF
DRUG ADDICTION

A drug is any chemical substance that causes a change

in an organism's physiology or psychology when consumed.
Drugs are typically distinguished from food and substances that
provide nutritional support. Consumption of drugs can be via
inhalation, injection, and smoking, and ingestion, absorption via
a patch on the skin, suppository, or dissolution under the tongue.

Pharmacology, a drug is a chemical substance, typically

of known structure, which, when administered to a living
organism, produces a biological effect. A pharmaceutical drug,
also called a medication or medicine, is a chemical substance
used to treat, cure, prevent, or diagnose a disease or to promote
well-being. Traditionally drugs were obtained through extraction
from medicinal plants, but more recently also by organic
synthesis. Pharmaceutical drugs may be used for a limited
duration, or on a regular basis for chronic disorders.
P a g e | 11

There are numerous governmental offices in many

countries that deal with the control and oversee of drug
manufacture and use, and the implementation of various drug
laws. The Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs is an international
treaty brought about in 1961 to prohibit the use of narcotics save
for those used in medical research and treatment. In 1971, a
second treaty the Convention on Psychotropic Substances had to
be introduced to deal with newer recreational psychoactive and
psychedelic drugs.

The legal status of Salvia divinorum varies in many

countries and even in states within the United States. Where it is
legislated against the degree of prohibition also varies.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United

States is a federal agency responsible for protecting and
promoting public health through the regulation and supervision
of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements,
prescription and over-the-counter medications, vaccines,
biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices,
electromagnetic radiation emitting devices, cosmetics, animal
foods and veterinary drugs.
In India, the Narcotics Control Bureau (abbr. NCB), an Indian
federal law enforcement and intelligence agency under the
Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India is tasked with
combating drug trafficking and assisting international use of
illegal substances under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Act.
P a g e | 12

 Drug addiction disorder is unfortunately quite common,

affecting more than 8% of people in the United States at some
point in their lives.

 Dual diagnosis refers to the presence of both a drug-use

issue addition to a serious mental health condition in an
individual.

 People can abuse virtually any substance whose

ingestion can result in a euphoric ("high") feeling.

 Inhalants like household cleaners are some of the most

commonly abused substances.

 While the specific physical and psychological effects

of drug use disorder tend to vary based on the particular
substance involved, the general effects of a substance
use disorder involving any drug can be devastating.

 Although drug use disorders have no single cause, there

are a number of biological, psychological, and social risk
factors that can predispose a person to develop a chemical use
disorder.

 Symptoms of a drug problem include recurrent drug use

that results in legal problems, occurs in potentially dangerous
situations, interferes with important obligations, results in
social or relationship problems, tolerance, withdrawal
symptoms, using a lot of the drug or for a long period of time,
persistent desire to use the drug, unsuccessful efforts to stop
using the drug, neglecting other aspects of life because of
their drug use, and spending inordinate amounts of time or
energy getting, using, or recovering from the effects of the
drug.

Types Of Drugs

 Alcohol
 tobacco
 Cannabis
 Cocaine
 Opioids

1. Alcohol

Alcohol is a drug. It is classified as a Central Nervous System (CNS)

depressant, which means that drinking alcohol slows down brain
functioning, neural activity, and further reduces the functioning of
various vital functions in the body. This is due to the increased
production of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma-amino butyric
acid, or GABA. When someone consumes large quantities of alcohol,
specifically more than the body is equipped to process, the result is
depressant effects. Some of the many depressant effects from alcohol
include:

 Delayed reaction time

 Cognitive impairments
 Slurred speech
 Unsteady gait
 Poor coordination or lack of motor skills
 Distorted perceptions
 Lessened inhibitions
 Distorted judgment
 Sedation
P a g e | 14

2. Tobacco

Tobacco is a plant grown for its leaves, which are dried and
fermented before being put in tobacco products. Tobacco contains
nicotine, an ingredient that can lead to addiction, which is why so many
people who use tobacco find it difficult to quit. There are also many
other potentially harmful chemicals found in tobacco or created by
burning it.

The nicotine in any tobacco product readily absorbs into the blood
when a person uses it. Upon entering the blood, nicotine immediately
stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine
(adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and
increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with drugs such
as cocaine and heroin, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and
also increases levels of the chemical messenger dopamine, which
reinforces rewarding behaviors. Studies suggest that other chemicals in
tobacco smoke, such as acetaldehyde, may enhance nicotine’s effects on
the brain.
3.Cannabis
Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names, is a
psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant. Native to Central and South
Asia, the cannabis plant has been used as a drug for both recreational
and entheogenic purposes and in various traditional medicines for
centuries. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive
component of cannabis, which is one of the 483 known compounds in
the plant, including at least 65 other cannabinoids, including cannabidiol
(CBD).Cannabis can be used by smoking, vaporizing, within food, or as an
extract.

Cannabis has various mental and physical effects, which include

euphoria, altered states of mind and sense of time, difficulty
concentrating, impaired short-term memory, impaired body movement
(balance and fine psychomotor control), relaxation, and an increase in
appetite. Onset of effects is felt within minutes when smoked, but may
take up to 90 minutes when eaten. The effects last for two to six hours,
depending on the amount used. At high doses, mental effects can include
anxiety, delusions (including ideas of reference), hallucinations, panic,
paranoia, and psychosis.
P a g e | 15

Cannabis is mostly used recreationally or as a medicinal drug,

although it may also be used for spiritual purposes. In 2013, between
128 and 232 million people used cannabis (2.7% to 4.9% of the global
population between the ages of 15 and 65). It is the most commonly
used illegal drug in the world, though it is legal in some jurisdictions,
with the highest use among adults (as of 2018) in Zambia, the United
States, Canada, and Nigeria.

4. Cocaine

Cocaine (from French: cocaine, from Spanish: coca, ultimately from

Quechua: kúka) is a stimulant drug obtained from the leaves of two
Coca species native to South America, Erythroxylum coca and
Erythroxylum novogranatense. After extraction from coca leaves and
further processing into cocaine hydrochloride (powdered cocaine), the
drug may be snorted, heated until sublimated and then inhaled, or
dissolved and injected into a vein. Cocaine stimulates the reward
pathway in the brain. Mental effects may include an intense feeling of
happiness, sexual arousal, loss of contact with reality, or agitation.
Physical effects may include a fast heart rate, sweating, and dilated
pupils. High doses can result in high blood Pressure or high body
temperature. Effects begin within seconds to minutes of use and last
between five and ninety minutes. As cocaine also has numbing and
blood vessel constriction properties, it is occasionally used during
surgery on the throat or inside of the nose to control pain, bleeding,
and vocal cord spasm.

Cocaine crosses the blood-brain barrier via a proton-coupled

organic cation antiporter[19][20][21] and (to a lesser extent) via
passive diffusion across cell membranes.[22] Cocaine blocks the
dopamine transporter,[23] inhibiting reuptake of dopamine from the
synaptic cleft into the pre-synaptic axon terminal; the higher
dopamine levels in the synaptic cleft increase dopamine receptor
activation in the post-synaptic neuron,[24][25] causing euphoria and
arousal
P a g e | 16

5. Opoids
Opioids are substances that act on opioid receptors to
produce morphine-like effects.[2] Medically they are primarily used for
pain relief, including anesthesia.[3] Other medical uses include
suppression of diarrhea, replacement therapy for opioid use disorder,
reversing opioid overdose, and suppressing cough.[3] Extremely
potent opioids such as carfentanil are approved only for veterinary
use.[4][5][6] Opioids are also frequently used non-medically for their
euphoric effects or to prevent withdrawal.[7] Opioids can cause death
and have been used for executions in the United States.
Side effects of opioids may include itchiness, sedation, nausea,
respiratory depression, constipation, and euphoria. Long-term use can
cause tolerance, meaning that increased doses are required to achieve
the same effect, and physical dependence, meaning that abruptly
discontinuing the drug leads to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.[8]
The euphoria attracts recreational use, and frequent, escalating
recreational use of opioids typically results in addiction. An overdose
or concurrent use with other depressant drugs like benzodiazepines
commonly results in death from respiratory depression. Opioids act by
binding to opioid receptors, which are found principally in the central
and peripheral nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. These
receptors mediate both the psychoactive and the somatic effects of
opioids. Opioid drugs include partial agonists, like the anti-diarrhea
drug lope amide and antagonists like naloxegol for opioid-induced
constipation, which do not cross the blood-brain barrier, but can
displace other opioids from binding to those receptors.

This study conducted in Kashmir valley tries to look

at the crucial aspect of drug awareness and vis-vis treatment
of drug addiction especially for the students of our society.
The study reveals that 91.23% respondents are not aware of
the process of drug de-addiction. Only 5.6% respondents
know about the NGO(s) working in the field of drug de-
addiction and only 8.21% respondents know about the drug
de-addiction centre(s) present in Kashmir valley. There is a
great need for creating awareness about drug abuse among
students. In Kashmir the problem of drug addiction has
metastasized for several reasons. To begin with, the role of
the drug monitoring agencies in controlling the menace in the
Valley is nearly zero, emphasizes a doctor. Any person booked
under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances
(NDPS) Act can be released on bail; whereas, the act is non-
billable in any other state. It is difficult to break the nexus
between the chemists, the peddlers and the police, admits a
high-ranking Govt official. Sopore and South Kashmir are the
worst hit in the Kashmir Valley.
