▪ As we have seen earlier that the surge generated in the system gets
reflected and refracted at the point of discontinuity.
▪ There is a build up of voltage in the system with the passage of time.
▪ Practically impossible to calculate the build up of voltage using hand
calculation except in simple cases
▪ Thisled to development of transient voltage analyzers.
▪ Travelling waves problems were studied with graphical methods
before digital computers became available
▪ Bewley’s lattice diagram and Bergeron’s method became popular.
▪ To keep track of the multiplicity of successive reflections at
discontinuities in the system
▪ Bewley devised a time space diagram which shows position and
direction of every incident, reflected and refracted wave at every
instant of time.

▪ To keep track of the multiplicity of successive reflections at

▪ Bewley devised a time space diagram which shows position and
direction of every incident, reflected and refracted wave at every
instant of time.
▪ Two axes are established
▪ Horizontal one scaled in distance along the system.
▪ Vertical one scaled in time
▪ Lines showing passage of surges are drawn such that their slope
gives time corresponding to distance travelled.
▪ At each point of change in impedance,, the reflected and
transmitted waves are obtained by multiplying the incident wave
magnitude by the proper reflection and refraction coefficients.
