In 1885, the first political part of India called the Indian National Congress

(INC) was formed by a British civil servant called Allan Octavian Hume, along

with other educated Indians.

The INC tried to draw the attention of the British to the problems faced by

the people. The members of INC included Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Dadabhai

Naoroji. They believed that British would listen to their suggestions through

persuasion. They were called Moderates. But British ignored all the requests

of the moderates.

The younger members of the Congress decided that strong action was needed

to make the British accept their demands. They were called extremists. Lala

Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal belonged to the

extremist group. Tilak urged the common people to become a part of the

struggle for freedom and wrote against the British in his newspaper Kesari.
