ABSTRACT

Markets play very important role to the city which reflect various trade activities,
economical aspects of the city and sometimes related to the daily lives of the city people
and also reflect social importance of the city. Bazaars are not just a place which deals
with the exchange of goods but also plays an important role of good public space from
where city could be envisioned. Markets are the place where you experience social and
cultural values of the space and revitalizes a program that promotes shared spaces and
bring different communities together at one place. Human culture in represent by the
cities and towns and markets are one of the main features of that unique identity of that
place, which also represent growth of the city by replicate city’s social and economic
development.

This kind of shopping spaces are one of the main public spaces in the built environments.
This kind of spaces is not just a tangible existence of a marketplace, but it exists as a
concept or idea, a notion of diversity coming together to form a whole set of tangible and
intangible essence of life in its own. Because of its socio-economical and cultural values,
its infrastructure development, the periodicity, you can’t make it inseparable
functionality. As time passes these spaces have so much of changes in terms of
functionality, arrangements, work patterns and many more. Throughout the history, we
can see the typological transformation of this retail functions from opened or covered
bazaar spaces to closed AC shopping malls, from traditional, culturally rich market to
modern markets. These changes have impact on traditional markets of the city very badly
because of issues with their old planning in the congested areas.

This thesis is small attempts to do some research in these aspects with respect the
change in time right from the origin of these market spaces till markets in modernization
period. It is also to understand changes depending on a factors like context, organization,
cultural, social, economic with its historic relevance and to know bazaar’s functionality as
a system to behave as a public space. This thesis also tries to analyze and explain the
behavior of the old markets against the transformation in modern period with what
difficulties it faces right now

CHANGING DYNAMICS AND CURRENT CONDITIONS OF
TRADITIONAL MARKET (IN CASE OF SURAT)

CHAPTER-1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND
What we see today- bazaar, the concept of bazaar was developed in Iran around 3000 BC.
The first word use for it is Bazaar, according to some reports. They developed these
concept in some large cities which dedicated to trade and commerce, some suggest the
markets are seen in ancient Mesopotamia, too. Market districts are also found in Egypt
for some international trade. But Sassanid rule plays an important role in Iran for
development of urbanization and commerce. These bazaars were usually in the heart of
town or city, where it spread around and affected the development of the
neighborhoods. These bazaars usually have or adjoined by an open-air plaza that have
various activities at a place.( From: The Evolution of Urban Bazaars from Traditional
Bazaars to Modern Shopping Centers).

With this changing world, India also changes a lot in many aspects, one of those things is
consumer growth with globalization. the evolution of shopping spaces have
commendable changes. In the way of modernization & rise in globalization there are
some standard strategies adopted all over the world for the architecture of shopping
mall. India is become major part of this globalization.

This modern shopping mall culture effect rooted commercial habits & urban forms that
existed in medieval times. The malls provide comfortable shopping experience but the
traditional place like character is no longer present in malls.

Malls are the place where you find every possible thing that comes in your mind like from
cloths, food, home appliances. Basically, mall is a place where segregation of every
function and activity with multiple serviced provided at one place. Change in a time and
with new technologies, almost every Indian cities have big malls where one can find
international brand with their fixed price & systemized buying on the goods and products.
Characters of local market spaces are missing over these kinds of shopping malls.

On the other hand, markets have their own values- where huge amount of people
roaming all around this area, surrounded by chaos of all type of noises all together
packed within this beautiful place with various colors, smells and touch. There are
many typologies of markets like Government markets, Old traditional markets, Street
markets, Cultural markets, Festival markets, Seasonal markets and many more types.

If we talked about Surat city, which is formerly known commercial capital city of the
Indian state of Gujarat and second largest commercial hub of western India after
Mumbai. Surat have so many Markets in the city which covered different areas in the city.
The purpose of these markets are also different like some of them are for Fruits &
Vegetables, some are for jewellery, some are for clothes, and so on.
Changing Dynamics And Current Conditions Of Traditional Market

Focusing on traditional markets of Surat. Purpose, cultural value, of these markets are
gone with time changes. Spaces are not suitable with current scenario. people of Surat
tend to enjoy all sorts of markets with full energy but somehow these markets ignoring &
neglecting the people who lived around these markets and every time when we think
about these spaces then the situations which are come in our mind is Chaotic,
Unhygienic, Unorganized, Uneven, and so on.

Whenever I visit these markets there is no traditional values which comes in my mind the
only questions which comes in my mind like Why our markets are so dirty? Why there is a
wastage of things? Why our markets are unorganized? Why we can't imagine market as a
well- developed public space? And so on.

It always gives me thoughts to address this issues & resolve it with proper approach
which benefit vendors as well as its users.

It's high time to upgrade our market places by research about the markets with
considering community's social & economic needs, and also understand their urban
outlines which amalgamate with the surroundings.
