correct or incorrect. If it is correct, mark/ write A. if it is not correct, mark/ write B on your
answer sheet.

Living in the countryside can be very difficult for teenagers. Their nearest friend lives miles
away and it's impossible to get into the town to go shopping or attend a club. 13-year-old Fiona Timson,
who lives in Carneath in Wales, says 'Everyone else in my class seems to have such interesting
weekends. They meet each other by chance when they're out shopping, and they decide there and then to
do something cool together. That never happens to me.'
Fiona's mum, Helen, realises it's a problem. 'We moved here because it was quiet and we knew we
wouldn't have to worry about her going out alone. But we possibly made the wrong choice. Fiona hardly
ever leaves home, not because she's scared, but because there is simply nowhere for her to go. The
village is tiny, and most of the people living here are old. I can't drive her around because we only have
one car, and my husband uses it for work.' Fiona can't spend the evening with friends because the last
bus to Carneath is at ten past five in the afternoon. She even has to leave her school orchestra practice
early in order to catch it.
The Country Kids organisation aims to help children like Fiona, and their families. A grant from
Country Kids gives families money for four taxi rides per month, up to a distance of twenty five miles
each. This allows children like Fiona to attend an after-school club once per week or visit friends on
Sundays. Country Kids also organizes trips to theatres and sports events in nearby cities at weekends.
The parents don't have to do anything. A minibus comes directly to the house and picks the kids up.
To qualify for a grant from Country Kids, children must be between the ages of eleven and sixteen, and
live in a village with a population of less than 1000 people. The village must be more than twenty miles
from a town. The family's income must also be below a certain level. For Fiona's schoolfriend Emma,
who lives in nearby Dolbury with a population of 894, it's perfect. Unfortunately, Fiona misses out. The
population of Carneath is 1159.
17
The number of families applying to Country Kids for a grant is increasing, and its president, Judith
Sankey, is finding it more and more difficult to find funding. 'There are so many great organisations
looking for money. A lot of people feel that curing diseases and helping animals is more important than
the work we do, so they prefer to give their money to them. We're always worrying that we won't be
able to carry on. But the families we help really do appreciate what we do, so I hope the organisation
can continue to run in the future.'
A B
1. Fiona would like to have fun without having to make plans.
2. Fiona's family moved to the countryside because of their work.
3. Fiona's mother does not allow Fiona to go out alone.
4. Very few children and teenagers live in Carneath.
5. Fiona is unable to play in the school orchestra because of where she lives.
6. A child with a Country Kids grant gets free transport home twice per week.
7. Country Kids takes children to see plays in nearby towns.
8. Fiona doesn't qualify for a Country Kids grant because her family earns too much.
9. Fewer and fewer families are requesting money from Country Kids.

CO-OPERATIVE YOUNG FILM-MAKERS OF THE YEAR

Have you got something to say? An idea for a great movie? An interesting documentary? Or an
amusing comedy? Don’t keep it to yourself. Get together with some friends, share your thoughts and
make a film or video.
Every year, Co-operative Young Film-makers offers you the chance to see your work on the big
screen. For over 30 years the Co-operative has organized a festival for young film-makers, proving
how committed we are to young people and their films. We’ll be holding this year’s festival on
Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October at the National Film Theatre.
We’re looking for young film-makers with imagination. Whether you’re already planning a career in
the movies or have never made a film in your life, it doesn’t matter. We want to see films and videos
from people of all abilities and levels of experience.
NOW FOR OUR RULES AND SUGGESTIONS
* You might be at school or college. Perhaps a member of a youth club or drama group. Maybe
just a group of friends. The only thing we do say is that you have to be less than 21 years old in order
to enter our competition.
* We want to show as many films as we can on the big screen- the briefer the films, the more we
cans show. You can say a lot in the six minutes or less that we suggest. Especially if you plan your
film in advance and edit it well.

18
* You need to supply your own equipment- try borrowing from family and friends. Most types of
film and video are acceptable. Just concentrate on getting the most out of your equipment.
Experiment a bit!
* Think of an interesting storyline. It’ll help to make your work a bit different. We’re really keen
to get films about the environment or international issues. Why not try writing your own music?

Every film and video we receive is looked at by our group of judges. They watch each one from start
to finish, then tell you what they think. This can really help if you are thinking about trying again in
twelve months’ time.
If your film is chosen for screening at the festival- and last year 50 were- you will get free entry to
the festival, and we will cover any costs, such as your travel. The festival ends wth a presentation on
stage after your work is screened.
Get in touch before you start filming and we’ll post you a full information pack. This will include a
form to enter the competition and other details you need to consider.
Don’t forget the competition closing date is Monday 11 May.

My Job: John Knight, Architect

I can honestly say that architecture is the only job I ever thought of having. At school, I wasn't really
thinking about what to do afterwards. I enjoyed science and art subjects,
and got on well with my teachers, who often lent me extra books to study. My mum and dad suggested I
train as an architect, and I just went along with their idea. I'm glad I did. It's a great job, connecting
engineering, art, people and the places we all live and work in.
Clients – our word for customers - of course, are the people who make it all happen. Some I get on with,
some not. I have to balance what they say they want - and they usually know that very definitely - with
what is or isn't possible on a practical level. I invite them to explain the project as they see it developing,
and then try to explore ways forward from there. So there are the meetings, then the designing itself, and
also the researching, the checking, dealing with builders and so on. It's a good mixture of activities.
And, of course I'm developing all the time as a person, learning new ways of doing things. Ever since I
started out as a young architect, I've tried not to look back, but to keep finding new solutions. I've built
all sorts of buildings, with my favourite so far being a hospital - which is basically a hotel for the ill –
and the job. I'm really hoping to get is the new intercity station that will be built on the site of the old
museum here in the centre.

The Artist

People think being an artist must be a wonderful way to earn one’s living. And of course, there are lots
of great things about working for oneself, at home alone, even in a cold studio like mine. What I really
like is that nobody tells me what time to start in the morning. I like to paint as soon as I wake up, which
is always early, but isn’t the same time every day. And nobody tells me what to wear, or whether I can
take the afternoon off and go to a football match.
But then, I have no one to chat with when I’m bored, no one to discuss last night’s match with during
the office lunch hour. Sure, I can spend the afternoon doing something I enjoy like cycling or gardening
if I choose. But the work will still be there when I do finally get back home.
Unfortunately, working at home means that people can always find me, whether I’m bored or not, and

29
once I’ve answered the doorbell, it’s too late – my thoughts have been interrupted. No one would dream
of calling in if I worked in an office, but I find myself listening to friends’ troubles. As they talk, my
ideas disappear and I feel increasingly stressed thinking of my work waiting to be done.
However, when I hear the traffic news on the radio, and imagine my friends sitting miserably in their
cars in a jam, feeling bored, or waiting unhappily for an overcrowded tram in the rain, I realise that I
really haven’t got much to complain about. I find CD which will start me thinking, turn it up really
loudly and begin another picture.
